Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi guys!

I've been using Linux on and off for years but I decided I wanted to give it a proper go and actually become proficient with it.  I used Mint and OpenSuse but I found that with the easier Distros I just went back to my usual Windows way of thinking and didn't really progress much.  I decided to put Arch on my everyday laptop hoping that it would force me to actually get involved in what makes Linux tick.  The install went perfectly thanks to the Wiki.  I've got a few small things that are irritating me right now but I'm sure I'll get the better of the soon!

You know you're an Arch Linux user when you think, "Gosh darn it, I just can't stand how easy my computer is to use". wink

Yeah I've been tweaking this thing for two days, it just keeps getting better.

I've probably learned more about using Linux in these two days than I did in a month of using the "easier" ones.  I'm an I.T. Specialist by profession but I work on Windows environments, from server to desktop but we don't get much Linux exposure, in fact only one client has a Linux box and he has someone else that maintains it.  I'm basically trying to teach myself Linux the way I taught myself the other stuff.

After playing around with a couple of disto's I decided to give Arch a try because I like the idea of having a rolling distro. I really like Pacman and AUR it works very well.
So far I like it!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi @all,

I'm quite familiar with Linux, but new to Arch. Before switching to Arch, Debian and Backtrack aka Kali was my choice. While Debian is still running on my servers, I wanted to work on a bleeding-edge distribution and possibly also contribute to it.

Best regards!

Hi,

I was using *buntu for about two years but I always adore the rolling release model mainly because I hate reinstalling my OS. After an year long journey with Manjaro I'm here where the roots are.

Hello everyone,

I'm not exactly a new user, but I haven't registered on the forums yet. I've wandered through the world of Linux covering almost all modern distributions and each time I come back to the very cradle of Linux - Arch. I promise I will try to contribute, with both advice and code, once I get my Python skills up! smile

Ah, welcome fellow convert from the penultimate distribution.  I still love Gentoo, but Arch is my home.

Hello, first post here. A friend mentioned Arch a few weeks back so I decided to give it a try. This is my first real attempt at using Linux. I come from Windows. Yikes what a learning curve! But I got Arch up and running. Seems this forum has a vast amount of information, glad to be part of it.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hey guys, I'm Erik. I'm almost solely on Linux for 15 years now, but I have to confess I didn't do any serious distro-hopping for like 7-8 years, basically since Ubuntu/Mint/etc became popular. Since, over the course of the years so many aspects of Ubuntu started to really, really annoy me I finally decided to take a broader look at what's on the market. In effect, I downloaded and tried basically all the top 10  from distrowatch, as well as some notable others (eg. I used Gentoo around 2002-2005 or so, so I gave it another shot).

Now I feel rather ashamed I didn't give Arch a try long ago. Seriously, Arch seems to be the single most perfect distro for professional power users - I highly appreciate all your work, from the core team to AUR, from documentation to distribution philosophy, from system design to flexibility.

Rest assured, I'll bring Arch to all of my future students (I hold a professorship in CS). So, in highest appreciation, thanks for this great distribution!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hey!
I've been using Arch for about 6 months and Linux in general for about a year. For whatever reason, I decided to buy a laptop that came preloaded with Linux from Think Penguin, mostly just based on what I had heard from Linux ideals and stuff. Coupled with a bad taste left over from years of Windows and a general dislike of Apple products. I started off with Mint, but some bugs regarding my battery display and other little things made me decide to jump around a bit. I kept hearing about Arch and it sounded really awesome but kind of hard. But after going through a few distros, I decided to just try it out, and even the installation wasn't too difficult. I actually had much more problems messing around on Bodhi. The Beginners Guide was pretty much perfect. Still, I opted to dual boot. At first, in case I just didn't actually like Arch. I also don't have internet access at work but typically have loads of free time. So sometimes I have some things to do and no way to install the things needed to do them at the time, so I'll just boot into Mint and worry about figuring out how to do whatever on Arch after I get home. But I like that aspect of Arch, it's a good feeling to solve a problem.
I've read things on the forum quite a bit, but never felt like joining. Until now, since I actually have a problem that I can't seem to find the answer to elsewhere. I'll make a thread about that soon. Pretty much, I can't boot into Arch, so I've been stuck using Mint again the past few days and it's just bothering me. If I can't get this fixed, I might just reinstall arch and start from scratch, all my important things are both on another partition and an external hard drive. I don't think I can handle another day of using Mint, it just doesn't feel right. Arch just seems like the be-all end-all of distros.

Welcome to the forum, Grayson.

I don't think you'll need a thread to answer that question, there's a comment about it on catalyst-hook aur page.
basically latest catalyst version is broken on kernel 4.2 , but does work with kernel 4.1.x .
linux-lts is currently at 4.1.8+ , so does work with catalyst.
