startx issue - ESXi 6.0 Guest with ATI R5 2XX series GPU pass-through

I am having an issue getting Xorg to start, I have attached a full log file and config file. I believe it maybe because it is seeing (2) gpu's and not understanding which is primary/secondary. Just in as the title doesn't explain the install base:

VMware ESXi 6.0 Host
ATI R5 2XX series GPU passed through to archlinux guest

If someone could shed some light on what the issue might be, it greatly be appreciated.

Did you try to run it with only single screen (physic + configuration) ?

Yes, I have tried it with only one and modified the xorg.conf accordingly, still same exact error msgs in Xorg.0.log

Re: startx issue - ESXi 6.0 Guest with ATI R5 2XX series GPU pass-through

The bus ids in "lspci -k" output don't match at all with the ones in xorg.0.log and xorg.conf, are you sure they are from the same archlinux instance ?

Re: startx issue - ESXi 6.0 Guest with ATI R5 2XX series GPU pass-through

Yes, same instance, and I didn't quite get that as well. The xorg.conf was generated by aticonfig, which reports different bus id in the conf than from lspci. For SNG, the first thing I tried was to change the bus id in the conf to match the results from lspci but the same exact error was pushed out.

Re: startx issue - ESXi 6.0 Guest with ATI R5 2XX series GPU pass-through

That does make things harder, but it will have to do.

lspci output indicates that ESX provides 2 cards to archlinux , the radeon one and :

00:0f.0 VGA compatible controller: VMware SVGA II Adapter
	Subsystem: VMware SVGA II Adapter
	Kernel modules: vmwgfx

Do you have xf86-video-vmware installed ?

Re: startx issue - ESXi 6.0 Guest with ATI R5 2XX series GPU pass-through

I do have the feeling that the xorg.conf created by aticonfig needs adapting.
Please rename or move the aticonfig created xorg.conf file temporarily, then run startx and post xorg0.log .

I expect it to fail, but give info about what X autodetection sees in your system.
(not using Xorg autodetect as basis is imo biggest technical problem proprietary graphics drivers have).

Re: startx issue - ESXi 6.0 Guest with ATI R5 2XX series GPU pass-through

Ok, so when using xorg autodetection X does work.

That's good to hear and indicates your basic setup is good.

Please post /var/log/xorg0.log , so we can see what X detects.
Comparing that log with the log you posted earlier should give clues about the problem when using aticonfig created xorg.conf file.

Re: startx issue - ESXi 6.0 Guest with ATI R5 2XX series GPU pass-through

xorg autodetect does configure vmware svga , but doesn't see the radeon devices.
This also indicates that the vmware-svga card is seen as the primary card.

run xorg -configure , copy the newly created /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to something like 20-vmware-svga.conf , post the contents.

I expect most of the content can be removed, but there will be parts that we need to copy INTO the aticonfig created xorg.conf .

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: startx issue - ESXi 6.0 Guest with ATI R5 2XX series GPU pass-through

My mistake, i didn't give you correct command.

from console as root (without X active) run

Xorg :0 -configure

this should create /root/xorg.conf  or /root/xorg.conf.new .

cp or mv that file somewhere as backup and post it's contents.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

(A works at time B)  && (time C > time B ) ≠  (A works at time C)

Re: startx issue - ESXi 6.0 Guest with ATI R5 2XX series GPU pass-through

Although it's clearly an autocreated file, it's contents are not at all what i expected. They are useful though !

Section "Device"
        ### Available Driver options are:-
        ### Values: <i>: integer, <f>: float, <bool>: "True"/"False",
        ### <string>: "String", <freq>: "<f> Hz/kHz/MHz",

        #Option "SWcursor" # [<bool>]
        #Option "EnablePageFlip" # [<bool>]
        #Option "ColorTiling" # [<bool>]
        #Option "ColorTiling2D" # [<bool>]
        #Option "RenderAccel" # [<bool>]
        #Option "SubPixelOrder" # [<str>]
        #Option "AccelMethod" # <str>
        #Option "EXAVSync" # [<bool>]
        #Option "EXAPixmaps" # [<bool>]

	Identifier "Card0"
	Driver "radeon"
	BusID "PCI:19:0:0"
EndSection

That section confirms that the R5 is seen by X on 19:0:0 .
It also means that the card at 0:15:0 MUST be the vmware-svga card.

If you want to use both cards in the archlinux ESXi  guest , create /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-vmware-svga-R5.conf with these contents :

Section "Device"
	Identifier "VMware SVGA II"
	Driver "vmware"
	BusID "PCI:0:15:0"
EndSection
Section "Device"
	Identifier "R5 passed-through"
	Driver "fglrx"
	BusID "PCI:19:0:0"
EndSection

Start X again, post the output of xrandr .

I don't know how useful having both cards in the guest will be, but know very little about ESXi 6.0 (have experience with ESX enterprise , but that was several years ago and we had very few linux guests on it).
An easier alternative might to be change the configuration ESXi gives the arch guest and ONLY have it provide the R5 card.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: startx issue - ESXi 6.0 Guest with ATI R5 2XX series GPU pass-through

xrandr >> xrandr-out

Screen 0: minimum 1 x 1, current 1024 x 768, maximum 8192 x 8192
Virtual1 connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
   1024x768 60.00*+ 60.00
   1360x768 60.02
   1280x800 59.81
   1152x864 75.00
   1280x768 59.87
   800x600 60.32
   640x480 59.94
Virtual2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
Virtual3 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
Virtual4 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
Virtual5 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
Virtual6 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
Virtual7 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
Virtual8 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

I don't think that is a simple task to remove the vmware svga driver from the guest os. If I could do that will all output going throught the R5 even from the guest start, that be great.

Re: startx issue - ESXi 6.0 Guest with ATI R5 2XX series GPU pass-through

Well, if you have access to ESXi admin tools you should be able to create a new template and select which hardware it should provide / pass through to the guest.
Atleast that's how we did it in ESX enterprise.
You could try asking about it on VMware ESXi forum.

I had hoped xrandr to show multiple outputs, so you could use PRIME but that doesn't appear to be the case.
I'm guessing you'll have to use PowerXpress features of the fglrx driver, but am not familiar with it.

please post xorg0.log , so we can check if both cards are now used.

Re: startx issue - ESXi 6.0 Guest with ATI R5 2XX series GPU pass-through

No mention of the R5 in those logs, so it only uses the vmware svga card.

Something between ESXi setup and archlinux kernel 4.2.2 gives problems when passing this card.
I suggest you go here https://communities.vmware.com/welcome , register an account then post in ESXi 6 forum.
If there are people that have experience with similar setups, your best chance to find them is that forum.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

(A works at time B)  && (time C > time B ) ≠  (A works at time C)

Thanks for your help, what sucks is that I can get Windows to work without issue, ugh.
