I did a full system update and the system occassionally stops playing videos. This survives restarting Chrome. It's not only YouTube. The music plays. If I jump to a new time, the frame is displayed. But the video doesn't progress. Then eventually, starting a few videos, it gets unstuck. Living with https://bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG-42985 is frustrating enough (dock/undock needs a restart), this new development is really a PITA.
Edit: even the progress bar, time etc doesn't change. It's like the tab is no longer redrawn.

are you using Chromium-Pepper-Flash?

Nope, it's HTML5.

I have exactly the same problem (i have sound, but no video). It occurs on chromium, too, and on chrome even with disabled flash plugin.
@chx, did you found a solution?

I have similar problem after full system update. Video in both Chromium and Firefox doesn't play, i.e. no video, no sound - I can skip to any time of video playback by clicking on progress bar and different image is rendered but it doesn't "move" like you would expect from a video.
Chromium uses Pepper Flash from AUR (20.0.0.267) whereas Firefox uses Shockwave Flash so I don't think that flash player itself is an issue here.

Same here. Also affects Netflix and Vimeo for me. Sound but no video. Sometimes it plays, most often it does not. Very frustrating. Nothing in the logs.

You might want to check what you all have in common, particularly which graphic cards and drivers being used. Another useful piece of information could be after which update did things break.

Well, I have nvidia gforce 970 and have tried several different driver versions. No change. The funny thing is that sometimes the video will work but there does not seem to be a pattern.

Hi, also got the issue.
If you have adblock install on chrome/chromium stopping it will let youtube videos play!

I have the same issue after upgrading chromium to version 47.0.2526.111 (64-bit).
All the html5 videos have sound, but no moving picture. I can also change the picture by clicking the timeline in different places.
I tried to disable and re-enable different chrome://flags to no avail (GPU hardware acceleration, WebGl etc.).

ok. I have discovered that if I play a video in another app (doesn't have to be browser, any video player will do) then if I close and re-open chrome the video playback will work straight away. I have tested this many times and I am able to reproduce it every time.

I got the videos playing by removing and killing pulseaudio
sudo pacman -R pulseaudio
sudo killall pulseaudio

Running into this issue right now, and this fixed it. Did not have to remove pulseaudio, just kill it. All packages up to date. Did anyone ever find more information on why this happens?

Please open up your own thread and don't necrobump 4 year old topics. If you happen to open your own thread include the following outputs while attempting to play a video
aplay -lL
pacmd list-cards
pacmd list-sinks
pacmd list-sink-inputs
sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
FWIW, I've never had an issue with this, so this is most likely due to some misconfiguration.
Closing.
