Black bar on LibreOffice 5.0

Hi all,

I'm running Arch on a Toshiba Satellite C55D. This morning I upgraded libreoffice-fresh to 5.0 and noticed a strange black bar, maybe 1.5 inches wide, on the right side of the screen. The bar appeared in both writer and calc. I rebooted and initially opened writer without the black bar, but it subsequently reappeared. I decided to uninstall libreoffice-fresh and install libreoffice-still. Now there is no black bar.

Any thoughts on this?

I cannot replicate.  This system is running Openbox with Compton on Intel graphics.

I can't either, on a Lenovo X201 (xf86-video-intel) and i3. Can't say much more unless you provide more details on your setup (such as WM/DE).

I am running Xfce 4.12 with xfwm4. Graphics card is Radeon HD 8210. Not running any proprietary drivers.

Which VCL Plugin do you use? When using gtk/gtk3/kde4 LibreOffice might have problems with your GTK{2,3} or Qt settings.

Re: Black bar on LibreOffice 5.0

Same here since I updated to LO 5.0 with XFCE, Compton and Nvidia drivers but it only happens on LO window.
I tried deleting all old LO configuration files, with the issue it's still here.
Sometimes after resizing the window the black box disappears.

At first I thought it was my theme, but even with the stock themes it does it. So all I can suggest it to downgrade to libreoffice-still until 5.0 is a little more stable :-).

Note: My config is XFCE with GTK2/3 compatible theme installed using laptops built in Intel graphics with stock kernel drivers.

Re: Black bar on LibreOffice 5.0

Try to run i.e. LOWriter this way:

SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=X lowriter

where "X" are:
gtk
gtk3
gen
kde4
and see that this error always appears. I notice it on my system (HD7500G, open source driver, Plasma 5) with gtk3. Only difference is that it is white bar, not black.

This solves the black bar issue, however doesn't fix a few other bugs 5.0 has :-).

For example, create a basic 2 row, 2 column table in LO Writer, now try resizing it using you're mouse, I find I am only able to adjust column width, and cannot adjust row size like you could in LO 4.4.

Oddly, on my RHEL7 workstation I didn't get the graphical issue at all but the row issue remained, but was slightly worse where you cannot adjust it at all.

5.0 though is still very new so give it a few point releases and it should stable up a bit.

For now I'll be sticking to v4.4 :-).

Yes, that's exactly what I had. Like you, I decided to downgrade and wait until they get some of the kinks worked out.

Re: Black bar on LibreOffice 5.0

I have problem like that but the black bar in the right. But it can solve by delete the configuration folder in $HOME/.config/libreoffice/4 then run LibreOffice again to create the new configs file.

Delete config files doesn't solve this, it happens when LO is launched maximized.
Try removing the configuration folder, run LO and maximize it. Then run it again and the black box will be there.

Re: Black bar on LibreOffice 5.0

I too have this issue on my desktop running Xfce 4.12 but not on the laptop running i3wm.  I have found libreoffice base to be really unstable on both however and have uninstalled.  When selecting a field in a form on both machines, it replaces the current field with another seemingly random value until you select a field somewhere else. It then inserts random values when adding a new record. It also crashes when trying to delete a relationship.  I couldn't find these bugs when I searched but it just doesn't feel stable enough.  Going to go back to 4 but would be happy to provide any test data if it helps.

What's your DE and Theme?, I'm using XFCE4 with Zukitre and open / close LibreOffice full a day. When maximize / minimize windows, I saw the black line but it's disappeared after it done. You can check the Composite Windows option, on XFCE it's locate in Windows Manage Tweak

Re: Black bar on LibreOffice 5.0

I have the same bug with my xfce Arch desktop with nvidia card on a i74790, however with my ThinkPad x220 laptop running Ubuntu Unity, I don't have the similar issue.

I'm using XFCE with Compton, it happens with any theme and without Compton.

Re: Black bar on LibreOffice 5.0

I reported the bug upstream and they gave me a workaround:
Uncomment export SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk on /etc/profile.d/libreoffice-fresh.sh

Thx. I'll try that when I get home.

Uncommenting export SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk on /etc/profile.d/libreoffice-fresh.sh did not help me, black bars still appear.

Re: Black bar on LibreOffice 5.0

@DarkSkyGhost
I had the same issue, a black bar appeared on the right, and the tool-bare took a dark ugly background after the update to LibreOffice5. Apparently they are trying to move to Gtk3, which is still experimental and causes some issues.
did you Logout/Login after Uncommenting export SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk on /etc/profile.d/libreoffice-fresh.sh? it only worked with me after logout/login.
If this doesn't work, try running libreoffice this way:

$ SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk libreoffice
