Sorry, I am serious, that's how the wiki says I should start pypanel, I'm probably missing something? I type
pypanel
in a terminal emulator and get that error.

Alright, from a terminal emulator is fine. Since it's complaining about a magic cookie, I would try deleting ~/.Xauthority before starting X.
