Do I have to manually create my own kdump kernel? Do I even need it?

My kernel has been crashing again and I don't know why. I've been trying to investigate this and can't find any information. It seems that the best solution would be to collect a kernel dump but from what I've read I need to compile my own kernel that runs when the other one crashes. I was wondering if there was a better way of investigating this other than the journal which doesn't provide any information. If there isn't, is there a precompiled kernel that I can use? If you think you can help, the crash seems to be triggered by chromium. Whenever the kernel panics, the whole machine freezes in place and nothing seems to work afterwards. The indicators don't flash.
