Steam not able to download games.

Hello,

So I'm running Arch Linux, and I just recently installed steam. I'm having a hard time downloading games though. It returns a connection timed out error after waiting a few minutes for steam to allocate disk space. I'm having trouble determining why that is. If anyone else is having a similar issue, or if any assistance can be provided, then that would be great. I'll try to upload as much information as possible.

Most likely you've hit this bug. The common workaround is to setup a DNS cacher like dnsmasq.

Hey thanks for the help! I thought it may have had something to do with the static ip that I set up on the computer. I'll try this approach. I have some questions though:

I plan on setting up an Arch server that will serve as a transcoding/file/NAS server. It will also serve as a DHCP server, eliminating my router from the equation. If I set up dnsmasq on the server, will this alleviate this issue? I am assuming that the DNS cacher will service all of my connected devices in this situation since it will be coming from the DHCP server.

Any kind of DNS caching will do; in particular, dnsmasq works as a DNS server and you can just point your other machines to it. You can use dnsmasq as a DHCP server, too, and in that case I think it will automatically set itself as a DNS provider, but you should check to be sure.

Just wanted to report that I set up an Arch server and had a DHCP and DNS server installed for a short while. Specifically dhcpd and bind. They worked great, but it was pretty challenging setting up port forwarding with iptables. I decided to postpone it for now and just use my default router. Though the DNS caching did work. I have a question, I set up bind/named as a DNS forwarder. Would this also work, or does it specifically have to serve as a DNS cacher? I don't need to worry about it right now, but for future purposes it might be useful.
