Flickering blinkenlights on Offlineimap 6.5.7

I have an issue with Offlineimap and an ncurses "flickering" problem using the "blinkenlights" UI.  I can't be sure, but either Offlineimap or python2 (or some Python-related ncurses library) was updated, and it gave me this problem.  It did indeed work prior to that update.  As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words:

Here's what it's supposed to look like, run on my Retina MacBook Pro running OS X Yosemite (Offlineimap installed using Homebrew):

Desired behavior

(For some reason Imgur doesn't like my good thumbnail, but the full GIF is only ~500KiB).  I have resorted to using the basic UI for Offlineimap, and that works.  But the colors convey information that is much harder to see in the basic UI.  Namely, I can tell when Offlineimap has finished downloading its set of messages (and it's trying to figure out what to do about my massive archive).  This allows me to go back to mutt and start reading email.

I have also tried Offlineimap within and without tmux with no change in behavior.

I noticed the same problem, it seems to be related to ncurses 6.
