Hi all,
I just got a dock for my Thinkpad X61 laptop, and it includes a DVD drive. I am able to play a non-region encoded DVD just fine, but when I try to play an old set of Futurama DVDs they don't work.
I installed regionset and set my region to 1 (it was un-set from the factory), and that made things work a little more, in VLC I can see the chapters in the Playback menu. But the DVD starts up to a grey screen and I can't get it to play anything. Mplayer starts up but the video is scrambled and the audio is running at way above normal speed. I can play the disk in VLC on my windows machine. VLC says this:
$ vlc /dev/sr0
VLC media player 2.1.3 Rincewind (revision 2.1.3-0-ge6a71cc)

Any ideas what's wrong? I have libdvdread, libdvdcss and libdvdnav installed.

I'm experiencing the same with most of my DVDs on my W540.
I think it's a software thing and so far I couldn't find any fix to this problem

It is possible it is a software bug, related to the Thinkpad models, specifically.
You caused me a momentary panic when I read your post, as my fresh install (Monday) is intended to be my primary household media server. I dusted off my old LG Single Layer DVD drive, installed libdvdcss, and fired up the Twin Peaks Gold Box (Stamped NTSC 1) and it worked just fine over here, for what it's worth.

Hello, please don't necro-bump someone else's thread since this thread is outdated - please read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fo … bumping.22 - also please start a new thread with your problems along with a log of the issue if possible..... A Moderator might come along and close this thread if further policies are broken.....

In this case, I think I'll keep this thread open. It is an old thread, but as it seems to apply to Thinkpads and does not seem to have been resolved, let's keep the discussion here.
LeftyAce is still around, so there is not a problem of the thread owner being absent.

Ok, since a mod has approved this thread to remain open I'll try and help - the last log which you've provided indicates that it fails to open vdpau have you got these installed here https://www.archlinux.org/packages/?sor … =&flagged= - also if your graphics card doesn't support vdpau disable it in vlc via Tools -> Preferences -> Input/Codecs , it might be under Hardware-accelerated decoding section change it to automatic - plus check the Video section and change Output to automatic and see if it then play's your DVD....

my /dev/sr1 play protected DVD is okay.
the problem is /dev/sr0
/dev/sr0 which is built-in T430s.
And I have already install libva & libva-intel-driver.

hmm, did you read the arch wiki - there's an article about the Thinkpad laptops here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Laptop/Lenovo - also you might be wise to look in the bios and see if there is an option to enable the Ultrabay disc - I don't know where abouts this option is but it seems to have solved it for other's on the web....

Is it just that one disc or do all DVDs not play correctly in the internal drive? How about data DVDs? Can you access the file-system contents - copy an entire DVD to your hard drive without error? Can you copy the VOB files to your hard drive and get VLC to play them from there (that is an actual feature)? Have you tried a cleaning disc in the internal drive?
Edit: the copy from's: from the internal drive.

I have enabled the Ultrabay disc in BIOS.
but still can not play protected DVD
I will try to install another distro, then testing this problem.

Finally, I solved this problem.
my DVD-RAM have no region set.
so I install regionset (AUR)
$ regionset /dev/sr0
Current drive parameters for /dev/sr0:
RPC Type: Phase II (Hardware)
RPC Status: no region code set (bitmask=0xFF)
Vendor may reset the RPC 4 times
User is allowed change the region setting 5 times
Would you like to change the region setting for this drive? [y/n]: y
Enter the new region number for your drive [1..8]: 3
New RPC bitmask is 0xFB, ok? [y/n]: y
Region code set successfully.
$ regionset /dev/sr0
Current drive parameters for /dev/sr0:
RPC Type: Phase II (Hardware)
RPC Status: active region code (bitmask=0xFB)
Drive plays discs from this region(s): 3
Vendor may reset the RPC 4 times
User is allowed change the region setting 4 times
then, now I can play protected dvd.
damn DRM.
