dejavu seris book in terminal

i try to use font "dejavu serif book" in terminal, but it doesn't get rendered correctly both in gnome and xfce terminal .
is there something wrong with my installation or configuration ?

You won't get help with such post. What do you mean by "doesn't get rendered correctly". Could you elaborate, post screenshot. How can we know if there is something wrong with your configuration if you tell us nothing about it?

The problem is bad kerning. It happens when you choose a non monospaced font in xfce4-terminal. I believe this terminal expect a monospace font. You are not really supposed to use a terminal with a non monospaced font (a lot of console applications rely on that for alignment purpose). Some terminals in other DE prevent you to use a non-monospaced font; xfce4-terminal apparently not, but is nevertheless not really able to handle them.

Updated: 1) you have edited your screenshots.. In this case we need the full image with the original resolution. You should give a link to them (and the thumbnails are too big for these forums).
2) Now the screenshot are OK. As I said the monospaced font render correctly.

if the terminal is not supposed to render those fonts, then why are they presented in the terminal font selection widget ?

I think it is not the case in KDE konsole. It hides the fonts in the widget (as well as the Windows command prompt). I think, but I am not sure, the widget is a standard tool provided by a library and they have not taken the extra step to remove these fonts. Maybe also this philosophy (quoted from http://www.linfo.org/q_unix.html):

UNIX was not designed to stop its users from doing stupid things, as that would also stop them from doing clever things.

Nevertheless a little Google search, will show you that using proportional fonts in a terminal render poorly whatever the distribution, for example this thread.
