[SOLVED] No HDMI output with Nvidia card

I have an NVIDIA GTX750 graphics card. I've never used HDMI before, but since it has a volume slider in the sound mixer i assumed it would just work. No such luck. I'm not getting any audio out of it. Here's my sound devices:

[gene@iommi ~]$ aplay -l | grep card
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC888-VD Analog [ALC888-VD Analog]
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 1: ALC888-VD Digital [ALC888-VD Digital]
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 7: HDMI 1 [HDMI 1]
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 8: HDMI 2 [HDMI 2]

Any ideas?

No, what are you trying to play sound with, have you tried all three outputs, does your TV/Monitor have actual speakers?

What results does

speaker-test -c2 -Dhw:1,(3,7,8) #try the respective numbers one after the other

give?

Okay... of the three outputs on the back of the card only one fits a standard hdmi audio cable. So that's what I used. It's running into an Onkyo Integra home theater preamp. I'm running the monitor from a separate output on the back of the card; is this not correct?

I'll run that test when I'm home later this evening.

Well... solved in a way. It's not in the computer. My preamp won't talk to HDMI unless a compatible display device is connceted.
