Dell M3800 fan issue & freezing

Hi,

I'm suffering from a problem, which I think was introduced in 3.18 (3.17 / 3.19 might also be possible, I don't remember anymore). During system boot up, just before gdm gets loaded, my system is freezing for about 3 - 5 seconds and the fans are running on maximum speed. The fans switch back to normal speed, once the login screen is loaded. I can then login and use my Laptop without any issues. However, if I try to read temperatures with "sensors" command, my system gets unresponsive for 3 - 5 seconds and the fans are going crazy again. They settle down after the freeze and sensors is showing me the following:

[tolga@Lightning ~]$ sensors
acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +27.8°C (crit = +105.0°C)
temp2: -268.5°C (crit = +105.0°C)

dell_smm-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
Processor Fan: 4800 RPM
CPU: +48.0°C

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Physical id 0: +47.0°C (high = +84.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 0: +45.0°C (high = +84.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 1: +45.0°C (high = +84.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 2: +48.0°C (high = +84.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 3: +41.0°C (high = +84.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

This never happened before. The old 3.14 LTS kernel didn't had this issue. I've flashed the latest BIOS (A09), but the issue persists. I can temporarily fix this issue by Clearing TPM module in BIOS and disabling it. However, after shutting down the Laptop for a while and booting it up again, the issue comes back. I'm not sure, what the trigger is, can someone guide me to find the culprit?

Cheers,
Tolga

//Edit: I've uploaded a small video on YouTube about this issue https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cq0dZdhwYJo. Unfortunately, you can't really hear the fan noise. But they're running at maximum speed, while the system is freezed.

Cooled by liquid helium, I suppose.   Clearly that is wrong.

Which kernel are you running?
What happens if you disable your display manger and log into a shell on the console?
What happens then if you start your display manager by hand?

Re: Dell M3800 fan issue & freezing

Hi ewaller!

I'm currently using the latest 4.2.4-1 kernel. I've got the latest packages and updates installed as of right now. But the problem started occuring on 3.18 (not 100% sure. Definitely was not present in 3.14 and lower).
When I disable the display manager and log on console, the fans don't spin up and there is no freeze during boot. I can also run "sensors" without any issues or freezes.
When I start the display manager by hand, there is no issue at all. No freeze, no fan issue, no problems when I execute "sensors". Temperature is still wrong though:

[tolga@Lightning ~]$ sensors
acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +27.8°C (crit = +105.0°C)
temp2: -268.5°C (crit = +105.0°C)

dell_smm-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
Processor Fan: 2300 RPM
CPU: +47.0°C

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Physical id 0: +47.0°C (high = +84.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 0: +46.0°C (high = +84.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 1: +44.0°C (high = +84.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 2: +46.0°C (high = +84.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 3: +41.0°C (high = +84.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

This is weird. Thanks for the help so far!

//Edit: I've just tested Ubuntu 15.10 Live CD. Same issue. Ubuntu 15.10 is using Kernel 4.2.

Re: Dell M3800 fan issue & freezing

I had all kinds of problems with the late 3.x kernels and the early 4.x kernels.  My system would block reads to any /sys files that were maintained by acpi.  I had thought it fixed, but during a compile the other night, the latest kernel did the same thing.  I'm wondering if these are related.

Anything interesting in the journal that corresponds to when the fans spun up?  You may see indications that the processors throttled, but I am also looking for what may have happened immediately before that

Re: Dell M3800 fan issue & freezing

This may not be related to your problem, but it may give you a way to check whats happening when the fans go crazy.
I am not sure if it works on the latest Precision notebooks but x200 onwards the following trick works.

Hold Shift+Fn and enter 15324  anytime after the BIOS POST is done - the Scroll lock led starts flashing
Press Fn + R to see the Thermal management mode screen where you can check temperatures, change fan speeds and control CPU throttle %

Careful using this with X running, it enters a 80x25 text mode and sometimes when you come back the display driver wont recover.

Re: Dell M3800 fan issue & freezing

My XPS 15 9530 should be really similiar to M3800 and the issue is not present..
wondering if it could be a hardware problem.

If you install the LTS kernel the issue is still present? If not write to the kernel mailing list
because it is a regression.

Re: Dell M3800 fan issue & freezing

@rep_movsd: that key combination did not work for me. I've also googled for solution for my laptop, unfortunately no such thing exists.

@lucazade: interesting. Yes, they are very similar, but not the same. There might be BIOS differencies and they also have a different GPU. The XPS 15 9530 has a Nvidia GT750M, whereas the M3800 features a Quadro K1100M GPU. Consumer grade GPUs are much more common and therefore better tested / supported. I'm wondering, if this issue is related with the GPU (please note, that I can't distinguish between GPU fan and CPU fan, my laptop has 2 fans). I currently have nvidia drivers installed; I will try out nouveau and report back. The 3.14-LTS kernel didn't had the issues. I'm unsure about the latest LTS kernel. I will test it and report back later.

Which BIOS do you have installed by the way? And are you booting Arch with UEFI only (legacy ROMs disabled?) or are you using legacy boot?

@ewaller: I've tested Ubuntu 14.04.2 featuring kernel 3.16, no issues, absolutely smooth. I was also unable to reproduce the issue under 3.19 - however, I'm not sure, if it was just "bad" luck. I will test it more extensively tonight and report back.

I've set my kernel to a more verbose log level and was able to get more information. Unfortunately, I've tried out some other kernel parameters and am currently unable to boot into my Arch install. I will restore it later today and report back. There were ACPI related errors, just 2 lines before the freeze (you could clearly see the freeze, it was for about 4 seconds). 1 line above the freeze, there was some info about EDAC ECC, something like "EDAC: ECC memory not available". I will post the relevant dmesg output, once I get the system running again.

Thanks for the help so far!

Re: Dell M3800 fan issue & freezing

It could be related to Quadro videocard.. In my office there are 10 xps 9530 with arch, refind and without legacy boot and no one have this issue.
You could try nouveau but Ubuntu live you tested uses it... mmm..

Edit: BIOS A09

Re: Dell M3800 fan issue & freezing

Is the edac_mc module loaded on your machine?   You might try black listing it and see if you see any change of behavior.  Also, in your "BIOS" setup (Not the right term for UEFI machines, but I digress...) See if you have the ability to turn off ECC mode.

Re: Dell M3800 fan issue & freezing

@lucazade: okay, I need to investigate it further then. It also might be a hardware fault, I don't know.

@ewaller: there is no entry for ECC memory. Also, my CPU doesn't even support ECC memory (Intel Core i7-4702HQ). However, the Quadro K1100M is capable of supporting ECC. Maybe this is leading to a conflict? Blacklisting the module sounds like a good plan. I will be able to check it out in 2 - 3 hours.

//Edit: here is a dmesg output. It's slightly different from last times' dmesg, so EDAC probably isn't the problem (look at the time).

I've now tried blacklisting ie31200_edac and mei_me, but the issue persisted. Due to systemd's nature of loading up modules and processes simultaneously, I think we need to watch around the freezing point. The ACPI warning is always popping up, so this really might be ACPI related.

//Edit2: also disabled iwlwifi and ie31200_edac + edac_core. So it seems to be unrelated to EDAC, WiFi and Intel Management Interface.

//Edit3: I've blacklisted dell_smo8800 and wasn't able to reproduce the issue since then. The dell_smo8800 got patched in early December, just before 3.19 got released. I will investigate this further.

//Edit4: Today, I've faced this issue again. So, blacklisting dell_smo8800 didn't fix this issue. I've also tried out the latest Linux LTS kernel 4.1.12-1; same issue. I've also faced this issue, when I booted off the latest Arch Linux install media 2015.10.01 - still same issue. So, it's not related Xorg / Desktop Environment / Nvidia / Nouveau drivers. It might be a hardware fault. Either way, I'm giving up for now.

Re: Dell M3800 fan issue & freezing

Hi @tolga9009,

You are not alone, I face the same issue with my M3800, it's worse on computer startup (cold), then it become less frequent when it warm's.
Do you have the same fealing ?

Re: Dell M3800 fan issue & freezing

Hi leelists,

interesting, so I'm not the only one. I really can't tell, if there is a difference. Though I've seen RPM values between 5000 RPM and 4600 RPM. I'm really curious, what the problem is. Is it ACPI? Or maybe Linux kernel? Or hardware related?

Cheers,
Tolga

I think i have a solution: disabling intel p_state support in kernel, it seem's to work for me...

Re: Dell M3800 fan issue & freezing

Hmmm, that is very odd. I mean, the CPU (and Intel p_state) is nothing special and used in several other laptops, like the Dell XPS 15 9530. It seems like setting something in BIOS / blacklisting some kernel modules clears something, until something else triggers and sets it again. I don't think, that it's a permanent fix.

I've just come across this bug https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=83921. MIght this be related? Maybe it's fixed for the Dell XPS 15 9530 and not for the M3800?

@lucazede: when you run sensors, do you see these odd temps aswell?

acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +27.8°C (crit = +105.0°C)
temp2: -268.5°C (crit = +105.0°C)

And if you run dmesg, do these show up?

[ 2.711301] ACPI: Invalid active2 threshold
[ 2.712377] thermal LNXTHERM:00: registered as thermal_zone8
[ 2.713551] ACPI: Thermal Zone [TZ00] (28 C)
[ 2.715143] thermal LNXTHERM:01: registered as thermal_zone9
[ 2.716265] ACPI: Thermal Zone [TZ01] (-269 C)

//Edit: I've just checked, BIOS A10 has been released for Dell M3800. Release notes:

Fixes & Enhancements
Fixes
- Fixed System hang up after Touch Touchpad

Enhancements
-Update RealTek RTL8153-VB PXE Rom to V2.01 for iPXE
-Update SMBIOS type0 format for Win10 BIOS Requirement

It looks like this is about on par with XPS 15 9530 BIOS A09:

Fixes & Enhancements
Fixes
- Fixed System hang up after Touch Touchpad
- Fixed USB Test Fail

Enhancements
-Update Flash Utility
-Update SMBIOS type0 format for Win10 BIOS Requirement

I'm waiting a few weeks before updating BIOS, but "Fixed System hang up after Touch Touchpad" might be somewhat related.

Hi tolga,

I did upgrade my bios to A10, but still getting the same hangs,
p_state disabling was a bad solution ... :-(

Re: Dell M3800 fan issue & freezing

I've just tested Linux 4.3 in testing repo, same issue. Guess we need to contact the kernel guys.

Re: Dell M3800 fan issue & freezing

This issue is still present in 4.5-rc2. I've found this related thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=203488. Blacklisting dell-smm-hwmon (formerly known as i8k) fixes this issue. i8k / dell-smm-hwmon detects the Dell Precision M3800 by a simple string match, which is probably the reason, why the M3800 is affected and XPS 15 9530 is not (it's searching for "Dell Precision" string). I don't know, if blocking dell-smm-hwmon has any sideeffects, but it's a temporary fix. I've reported this to Kernel Bugzilla: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=112021.

Re: Dell M3800 fan issue & freezing

Hello, does anyone still have this issue (freeze and max speed fans at boot)?

I'm using the newest ck kernel (4.10) and I still have the exact same problems as @tolga9009 descibed.
After reading https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=112021 I concluded that this issue is resolved since kernel 4.7 but apparently not.
I can blacklist dell-smm-hwmon and these problems disappear, but without dell-smm-hwmon and i8kutils my fans are acting like crazy.
Maybe some workaround can be done to avoid these freezes?
