I recently changed my package's version from V1R6 to SP3. Pacman sees this as a downgrade, and I would like to know the proper way of getting pacman to recognize it as an upgrade.
I know the epoch variable will work, but the wiki says to avoid using it. I'll stay away from it unless it was designed for this problem. Advice?

Looks to me like the current version is "2015SP3"
Mostly an epoch is used when upstream changes their versioning scheme or when Arch needs to downgrade for some reason. Using it when a package would keep jumping around isn't good.

Yeah, come to think of it: version "2015SP3" seems more accurate than just SP3. If I changed it to 2015SP3, that would solve my apparent downgrade issue. The version would also be its most accurate like I originally intended.
Thank you, Scimmia.
