Since the upgrade to Gnome 3.18, Gedit is very slow to start, load files and pretty much anything. On starting Gedit, I always get a error message Unsaved Document 1 - gedit is not responding. You may choose to wait a short while for it or force the application to quit entirely. Briefly this happens, in the gnome-shell overview I see a empty window placeholder as shown in the screenshot below. I have tried opening Gedit from the command line to see if there are any useful logs to look at, but didn't get any terminal output. I am running Gnome on standard X11 with a Intel Graphics Card.
Also opening even a small text file (less than 5-10 lines of text) takes 5-6 seconds to load before Gedit UI becomes responsive to further user input. Until then, the UI is unresponsive, cannot be moved etc.
This issue only started after the upgrade to Gnome 3.18.
[EDIT]
I downgraded Gedit to 3.16.3.2 and then it is back to normal and quite responsive. Its just Gedit 3.18 and 3.18.1 that is laggy. I tried disabling all Gedit plugins just to be sure they weren't causing the issue, but that didnt make any difference.

Jumping in to say the exact same thing is happening to me. I was worried my SSD was failing, but now I'm thinking not.
I want to diagnose this myself and put up a bug report, but beyond monitoring CPU usage and testing my SSD for errors I'm at a loss where to start.
My computer is a laptop with the following relevant hardware specs: Intel i7-3610QM CPU, NVIDIA GTX660M GPU, 8GB RAM, KINGSTON SMS200S360G (60GB SSD).

Gedit 3.18 is not liking when ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel becomes big.
Deleting that file makes it fast again.

If you are absolutely sure that 3.16.3 does not suffer from this but 3.18 does, then it is likely the fix for this bug https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=744611 that caused the performance regression (3.16.4 should be laggy as well).

Well I can definitely notice the performance difference between Gedit 3.16.3 and Gedit 3.18.1. I couldn't test 3.16.4 since I don't remember getting that update and couldn't find it in my pacman cache. I went straight from 3.16.3-2 to 3.18 unfortunately.

As a momentary workaround delete/keep clean ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel

I just want to jump in and say that I'm experiencing this as well.
The workaround did work though!

Wow, that sounds like quite an old bug I used to see under Ubuntu back around 2008.

I filed an upstream bug report https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=756258
@krnekhelesh Archlinux never packaged 3.16.4 but it contains the crash fix and hence the performance regression as well.
I found this application that removes obsolete entries from recently-used.xbel (stuff no longer existent on my disk).
https://people.gnome.org/~csaavedra/hac … le-clean.c
I tried it and it works.
To compile it,
gcc `pkg-config --cflags gobject-2.0` `pkg-config --cflags gio-2.0` `pkg-config --cflags glib-2.0` bookmarkfile-clean.c `pkg-config --libs gobject-2.0` `pkg-config --libs gio-2.0` `pkg-config --libs glib-2.0` -o bookmarkfile-clean

Filtering out non local files looks enough according to bug 744611. No need to delete the whole bookmarks file.
I'm not sure if this counts as necroing or not, but @hussam's fix worked perfectly. I had a single non-local URL which, upon removal, makes gedit snappy again.

They eventually did fix this in git https://git.gnome.org/browse/gedit/comm … 5374261621
