I love kde but..

why is it so bloated?

A)  I installed kdenetwork. which includes an irc client kSirc but I like konversation. So I installed both kdenetwork and konversation and now I have two irc clients installed.
I would have liked to remove kdenetwork but that would remove kget, kopete and would stop konqueror from being able to access smb shares. In the end I kept both kdenetwork and konversation.

B) I didn't install kdemultimedia because I already have kaffeine, amarok, xmms and mplayer(cvs) installed. But I needed a volume mixer, so I grabbed the source for kamix and compiled it in /opt/kde so I was able to avoid installing kdemultimedia.

C) I installed kdegraphics which has a nice varaiety of applications none of which overlap. But I still had to install gimp as an addition to kdegraphics.

Nevertheless, I'm not running low on space but I don't like having more than one application per function. KDE should get cleaned up.
konversation should replace kSirc so I don't have to have both installed.
I would switch to another DE but xfce-svn ran terribly slow on this machine so I removed it ( yes I know xfce is supposed to be fast ).

Hmm, well, this is the way they arrange their sources. Some like it, some don't.
Just use the application you want.

I'd say KDE is not worth leaving for that reason. It's a really good DE.

It's also an annoyance to me, but nothing more than just an annoyance. I mean, what's to gain? Not main memory, if you do not start apps they won't be loaded into the memory.

They may be in your way in the (k)menu, but the k menu editor works great. I have only 4 categories, with each no more than 5 or 6 menu items.

The only thing that those apps take, is harddisk space. Ask yourself this: Am I really short on diskspace or are these things just academic and irrational in nature?

Re: I love kde but..

This has been brought up numerous times. I advocated cleaning up KDE, since it appeared over-dependent on other packages and bloated.

However, as tpowa (Arch KDE maintainer) convinced me, KDE is shipped in the best possible way right now. KDE team provides a few huge bundles of apps, which aren't easy to split. While large distros can afford that, Arch simply lacks the manpower. Thus, KDE packages (like kdemultimedia) in Arch need to be dependend on the minimum set of packages that would assure that every app in said package will work.

I hope that KDE devs will come to their senses and KDE4 will be more split-up from the very beginning.

KDE4 will do a number of good things, like for example getting rid of Noatun.

BTW, am I the only one who has never once made use of JuK's support for GStreamer?

Re: I love kde but..

Some time ago I started a petition to remove GStreamer 0.8 support from kdemultimedia, seeing as how JuK is barely used and probably never used with GST 0.8... But tpowa killed it, and I suppose I can see why. What the hell, I'll just use Gnome until KDE4 comes along... The main reason I used KDE was Konqueror after all, my only real objection to other desktop environments/shells being that the only full-featured browsers are Gecko-based.

Re: I love kde but..

This thread reminded me of this cool mock-up I saw on KDE-look.org. Would KDE having its own package-management dealie make things too complicated?

Klik is a nice little thing that might also be able to fill this space, but the problem with klik is that it requires certain programs and kernel functionality that may not be present on even many Linux systems, let alone BSD and whatnot. Of course, all of those people should really just switch to Arch, but we can't expect everyone to be so enlightened. tongue

Still, I think the KDE developers are aware of the problems with their current packaging method, so I have faith that there will be something done in the end. KDE 4 certainly looks like the logical place to make a change here. Fingers crossed!

Re: I love kde but..

Because Noatun is a buggy piece of crap that crashes if you try to stream things.

(Ironically, the guy who wrote most of its code was a staunch Intelligent Design supporter.)

Hmm, you have a point. But is there something else one can use instead of Noatun?

Re: I love kde but..

Play around with them, find the ones you like, then delete the ones you don't like from the K-Menu. They'll still be installed on your system, but you'll probably never see them ever again, so who cares?

Or at least that's how I see it.
