Re: The dwm thread

Did you try with same wallpaper? Sometimes, a picture is heavy (i got 4 MB pics), and it takes some seconds to render it.
Try to see with 'xsetroot -bg black' if you still have this issue.

Yea, I tested with multiple wallpapers, even those which are mainly one color. It doesn't occur when I set a random color with xsetroot.

Though I don't think it's DWM specific anymore. I tested with multiple (tiling) WM's (all written in C though) and it occurs on all. I think it might be related to Catalyst ot the xorg 1.11 server I am holding. I'll open a specific topic on this soon.

Re: The dwm thread

Asked in a different topic, but I got no responses.
I wanna install a 2nd GPU (Nvidia GT240) on my system and a 2nd screen on it. Now, I have my 1rst screen on a Nvidia GTX460.
So my setup will include 2 GPUs and 2 screens, can I still use DWM with xinerama support? I mean moving windows on two screens, as if I connected them on the same GPU...
Need help.

Re: The dwm thread

Hi, I'm DWM geek also. I've tried Xmonad before and it was working as expected, but having 300 Mb of libraries looked like way too much for such a simple task, also C feels better to hack and configure.

How I start/restart it
DWM start script when a MODKEY+SHIFT+R pressed it exits with code 5 which causes it to recompile and start again while keeping all X windows up and running. This way I can apply changes any time and restart without troubles.

build environment - is manual, source code is available here. I really do not see the point in having it packaged, everyone likes to play it his own way.

status bar script - uses dzen2 and shell script including gmail check script, can be found here how it looks can be seen here

other I have dmenu patched to support native C implementation to search for $PATH executables and a cache to save most recently used on top, actually that is all I need in daily usage, I even use it for tmuxinator project list. You can find the source code here. dmenu path search script and a screenshot.
As you may have noticed everywhere I use solarized colors.

Hope that may be useful to someone wink

Re: The dwm thread

When I set dwm to floating mode, all new windows open in the upper left corner of the screen. How could I position them in the center by default?
Thanks!

Re: The dwm thread

This is the intended behaviour. For some applications, like terminals, you can write a rule to use the -geometry switch (or it's equivalent, depending on the term). For GUI apps, I have no idea.

I guess what you are coming up against is the fact that you are using a tiler to not tile by default. That seems sort of odd.

I recently tried out goomwwm and liked it, but for compatibility reasons decided not to switch from dwm. So I was just thinking of ways to make dwm behave sort of like goomwwm, but also maintain the tiling for when it's needed. The exresize patch is great for most of my purposes.

But, yeah, maybe it's, indeed, just an odd and not so reasonable idea. smile Thanks for the explanation!

Re: The dwm thread

I wouldn't say it was unreasonable: people like to personalize their workflows in different ways. Some GUI apps "remember" their last position: with a combination of rules, you may get what you are after.

Re: The dwm thread

quick question...I'm relatively new to dwm, which is to say that I've been using it for about 8 months. Does anyone know how to get trash support with pcmanfm? Or, should I be using some other file manager? perhaps the trash can (recycle bin) is a component of a Desktop Environment, and since dwm is not a DE, there is no support for such; could that be true? I've tried Sunflower, Gnome Commander, Midnight Commander, Ranger, just to name a few, but none seem to have trash support with dwm (it doesn't work with i3 either, but that's another discussion) I have gvfs installed. Could there be a service I need to enable, or a file system that needs to be mounted? Can anyone help? Thank You.

Have you checked if the deleted files are in ~/.local/share/Trash/files ?

yes...when send the files to trash, they do end up there...but the trash can doesn't show up on the left pane of the file manager, which means I don't have the functionality to either restore them or clean the trash can. I understand it can be done manually, but that's a rather clunky way of handling it. Just out of curiosity, I installed LXDE, when I use pcmanfm with LXDE, it does show up and work, which is what led me to believe the trash functionality is handled by a session manager or something.

Re: The dwm thread

Possible. Back when I used lightdm, my Thunar had trash. When I stopped, no trash anymore.
I guess you could make a symlink to your trash folder and use it that way.

so you think it's the display manager? because I stopped using those clunky pieces of junk a long time ago too

Re: The dwm thread

well, see I just installed Dolphin, and trash works just fine with that....this is just weird to me...I'm not sure I want to use Dolphin

Re: The dwm thread

I think that you need to install gvfs for Trash support with gtk apps ( gvfs also includes automounting etc ).

yea...I've got gvfs installed, and I know it's working because removable media mounts just fine. I've got trash working with Dolphin, but the bookmarking functionality doesn't work...I guess you can't have it all. I'm not sure I need trash bad enough to have a bunch of kde stuff installed anyway.

I'm having an issue with making configuration changes with config.h. I probable should've posted it here to begin with, but here's my post if anyone is interested:

Re: The dwm thread

Has anybody tried building 6.1 with the "systray" patch? It won't build for me.

Re: The dwm thread

A number of these patches need careful application. Must be done by hand in most cases.
We could start posting sources here and compiler errors but I doubt that would do any good.

This project works best when you apply the patches one by one, function by function, variable by variable, by hand.
How many errors are you getting? If they're too many consider starting a new thread and feed a pointer to that thread.

I'm not a coder, so I don't know how to tinker with the patch. This is the first patch I've attempted to apply.

You should add the declaration of those variables in the config.h file. Just add these lines among the others variables at the beginning of the file:

static const unsigned int systraypinning = 0; /* 0: sloppy systray follows selected monitor, >0: pin systray to monitor X */
static const unsigned int systrayspacing = 2; /* systray spacing */
static const int systraypinningfailfirst = 1; /* 1: if pinning fails, display systray on the first monitor, 0: display systray o n the last monitor*/
static const int showsystray        = 1;        /* 0 means no systray */

I think the problem is that the patch modifies the config.def.h file, but when building the package from ABS the config.h file in the package directory is used instead, and that doesn't contain the variables needed. smile
