Inapprooriate ioctl for device when using USB webcam

I'm trying to set up a laptop for my 7 year old daughter to use as a stopmotion animation "studio".

Using the Linux Stopmotion software I always get the following error (copied manually - so there may be mistakes):

ioctl: VIDIOC_ENUMSTD(index=0;id=0x0 [];name="";frameperiod.numerator=0;frameperiod.denominator=0;framelines=0): Inappropriate ioctl for device

Every time I try and activate the camera in the software it fails and I'm not clear, if I'm totally honest, if the above error is a factor or not, because I simply don't understand it!

I've tried the same camera and software on other Arch based machines and had no problems at all.  I've also, on the target laptop, been able to use the camera with various command line "grabbers" and they have worked.
