Hi all,

I live in South London, UK, and I'm new to both Linux and Arch Linux. Having spent the majority of my computing life using software I didn't understand, in a technical sense, I made a decision to commit to re-learning computing from as ground-up as possible, and Arch seemed like an obvious choice. A year ago I briefly ran Arch ARM on a Raspberry Pi for a little while and began learning through that, but this weekend just gone I made my first (successful) Arch install on an Acer laptop. Following a few bits of guides here and there and learning-as-I-went, I finally got the machine to boot into Arch, removing Windows completely. My interest in Arch is essentially an experiment in learning command-line computing with a view to expanding on this in future to see what else might be possible - with scripts, networks, programming, etc.

Myself - and others - remain unconvinced as to whether my complete-newbie approach to a system like Arch is a good way to go, but we'll see... for me it's all in the spirit of a learning experiment ;)

That's the right mindset! One need not be a Linux expert to run Arch, but have an interest in learning things. Beside, I know quite some people whose first Linux system was Arch or Gentoo and who are fine now.

Started using arch about a year ago, I wanted to learn linux and decided the best way to do that was to select a distro in which I had to do a lot of work myself. Learn by doing, and so far a love the experience!

Hi! I started with linux a few years back via raspberry pi. It was a quick progression from there to dual-booting my laptop and then dispensing with windows entirely and doing a lot of happy disto hopping. For a long time I had Arch installs kicking about as a sort of technical challenge, but when my last machine died I just went to Arch full time. And it's been great. There's very few problems I've not been able to figure out with the web, the Arch wiki and old forum threads, certainly nothing important.

Anyway, now I've hit a big problem that I'm getting nowhere with and I need to ask for help, so it was time to stop lurking and say hello.

I'm a System admin , who used only Microsoft products and some red hat..
Arch Linux was my first Linux , I went through hell and back to install and config it , but now I love it!!

My future goal is the be Linux developer , working now on C# C++ and python

Hello everyone,

After an upgrade from Ubuntu 15.04 to 15.10 that resulted in a non-booting system, I decided to try Arch.  To warm-up, I did a basic install.  Then, I did a LVM on LUKS installation (which took 5 or 6 tries to get it right).  Then, I changed my mind and did a "Simple partition layout with LUKS."  I feel like I'm really on track to learn how Linux works with Arch even though I've been using Ubuntu since about 2008.  Now I need to start going through the General Recommendations...

I'm Axel aka BuLLeKeUp, 25 years old French Ph.D Student and Linux user since 2006 - 2007 and Arch user since 2010.
Never found the time to come here to talk and share my Arch experience until now !

I know this is the newbie corner, but in fact I am not really a newbie.
My thesis subject is about IoT networks, and so I am working on embedded Linux / Bare metal systems and network simulators (NS3 to be precise).

I have made my own work environment based on Awesome WM with some scripts added (I will share it with you in the appropriate topic when I have the time to do so), and use Xen to virtualize Windows machines (Yeah, gaming )

I currently use Xen with LVM on LUKS setup for my machine, so if anybody has questions about that, I may be able to answer you

Hello there.
My real name is Alex and I am a german physics student. I started coding when I was 14 and used different Linux distros time to time but was allways afraid to switch my main system from Windows to Linux. But since I want to force myself to not waste any time playing games anymore and in computational physics allmost everybody uses linux I decided to really learn linux. So the only real choice was to start setting up a system from the ground up. Apart from that my attitude towards life pretty much aligns with The Arch Way.

greets! Why Arch? because Ubuntu wouldn't do waht I wanted it to! I have been using linux for the better part of 15 years or so. First box was running red hat when it was still free. Then I moved to Slackware and Mandrake. I am once again a n00b as I have forgotten what I once knew. It happens if you don't keep pace I suppose. This Arch is running on a Toshiba Satellite E55-A5114, which is Not on the Hardware comaptibility list. Minimal issues with the install, thus far I am quite pleased with this distro.
