I have analog sound on the web, gnome-mplayer, LXmusic simple music player, but no longer on vlc or banshee.
On VLC spdif sound is perfect but will no longer switch over.
On banshee, the pulse audio volume control shows banshee playing.
All applications are unmuted.
Any ideas would be helpful

Do all of these have native pulse support? are pulseaudio-alsa and alsa-plugins installed?
Offline
pulse working correctly. all plugins installed.

I have the same problem, but only in same games (supertux - supertuxkart)
I have installed apulse and lib32-apulse for skype

@francesco_dem this isn't the same problem, yours is with a regression in openal (see: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/47136 rebuild openal with the patches provided there or build openal from latest git until a fixed version has been released)

there you have it, vlc blocks. Make sure to set VLC to use the pulseaudio backend somewhere in its settings (Preferences -> Audio -> Output set that to Automatic or Pulseaudio)

or simply install pulseaudio-alsa

Have pulseaudio-alsa. Will change configuration and report back.

As you can see banshee is not recognized. I just installed it.
In addition vlc has stopped playing analog stereo, although I have the correct setting in pulse volume control

you want to have the last output, if anything other than pulse has your cards open then that's likely not what you wanted. And if vlc still shows that you haven't switched the flip correctly or your pulseaudio-alsa bites itself with another .asoundrc somewhere. have you manually created an asoundrc sometime? Can you have the applications you have problems with open and post
pacmd list-cards
pacmd list-sinks
pacmd list-sink-inputsplease post output of commands within [ code ] tags in the future, makes it more readable

Your default sink, and thus the sink banshee plays to is a null sink so I doubt that's what you want, what happens if you switch away from that in pavucontrol? Where do you want to play to? The SPDIF of your internal card? you'll have to switch the profile on that as well. (Did you just enable all the sinks in paprefs and now your stuff plays to an empty sink?)

I have no idea how all of this happened. Hasn't been touched in three years. Will follow your instructions and report back.
Offline
Well technically the rtp sink has to be a null sink , but it doesn't sound like you actually want to play to the rtp sink. A reason for why this happened could be the recent ALSA update which changed a few things on how cards are detected, that may have inclined pulseaudio to set RTP as the default sink since it was the only stream on which the identifier remained constant.

I will update the system as soon as the new kernel gets out of testing.
