ALSA - Weird audio problem - maybe phonon related

Hi pros, newbie here.
I'm running Arch on my machine and I'm so happy with this distro. Some days ago I switched from fglrx to radeon and today I realised that audio won't work in some apps.
The problem is weird because I'm non using HDMI audio, so I'm not sure is related to the video driver switch.
Another strange thing is that phononqt4(through amarok playback settings) shows every audio device, when phononqt5 (I'm running plasma5) shows "Default" device only and no recording devices.
So I can play audio in chromium, amarok, otter, vlc and almost every software, but I can't hear plasma 5 sounds (like volume-/+) and I have no audio at all in Steam and CS:GlobalOffensive.

speaker-test goes well, alsamixer is ok, kmix shows right channels, radeon.audio=0. I don't know what to do.

Re: ALSA - Weird audio problem - maybe phonon related

Thank you, but sadly "LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libasound.so.2 steam" did not fix the issue. Still no audio in CS and mic not working not even in the steam mic test.

I saw this in the steam log:

ALSA lib confmisc.c:674:(snd_determine_driver) could not open control for card 0
ALSA lib conf.c:3328:(snd_config_hooks_call) function snd_config_hook_load_for_all_cards returned error: Invalid argument
ALSA lib confmisc.c:674:(snd_determine_driver) could not open control for card 0
ALSA lib conf.c:4241:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_card_driver returned error: Invalid argument
ALSA lib confmisc.c:392:(snd_func_concat) error evaluating strings
ALSA lib conf.c:4241:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_concat returned error: Invalid argument
ALSA lib confmisc.c:1251:(snd_func_refer) error evaluating name
ALSA lib conf.c:4241:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_refer returned error: Invalid argument
ALSA lib conf.c:4720:(snd_config_expand) Evaluate error: Invalid argument
ALSA lib pcm.c:2217:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.default

EDIT, the trick works using the 32bit path:

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libasound.so.2 steam

Now the problem affect only plasma 5 environment.

Re: ALSA - Weird audio problem - maybe phonon related

The miracle here is that you get anything at all out of this chipset, it's notorious for not working/only working on a very select few of setups. tongue

That said is there any indicative output on starting the phonon kcm? maybe it's config got corrupted, can you try deleting

~/.config/kde.org/libphonon.conf

and check if it works then?

Re: ALSA - Weird audio problem - maybe phonon related

I've worked and I made it work. That SoundCore3D is not on a discrete card but is placed directly on my z97 fatal1ty professional. The only things not workin are frontal in/out and audio effects.
Everything was good until some days ago, and idk what I could have change to cause the problem.
I have already deleted all phonon and alsa file from my user.

systemsettings printed this (to be clear... I don't want pulseaudio crap on my system):

Disabling PulseAudio integration. Context connection failed: Connection refused
"/home/paolo/.config/kde.org/libphonon.conf"
libpaths ("/usr/lib/qt5/plugins", "/usr/lib/qt/plugins", "/usr/bin")
void BackendSelection::load() "/usr/lib/qt/plugins/phonon4qt5_backend" does not exist
void BackendSelection::load() "/usr/bin/phonon4qt5_backend" does not exist
qooooooooo
qooooooooo

but I have all installed:

[paolo@power-arch ~]$ yaourt -Qs phonon
extra/phonon-qt4 4.8.3-2
    The multimedia framework for KDE4
extra/phonon-qt4-gstreamer 4.8.2-1
    Phonon GStreamer backend for Qt4
extra/phonon-qt5 4.8.3-2
    The multimedia framework for KF5
extra/phonon-qt5-gstreamer 4.8.2-1
    Phonon GStreamer backend for Qt5

I'm going to reinstall all of these package with --force and check if these missing backend files exists in the packages.

Re: ALSA - Weird audio problem - maybe phonon related

I get these messages as well so this shouldn't be it, what might be a cause is the ALSA update, maybe the way phonon5 queries the devices doesn't work anymore. What happens if you downgrade the affected ALSA packages (1.1.0 -> 1.0.9) and have you rebooted somewhere between those days (the mention of the radeon.audio option makes me inclined to think you did but maybe that was before the issues started?)

OT: I have this card as well but decided for it not to be worth the hassle and bought a Xonar so I'm remotely interested in what you did to get the back ports running.

Re: ALSA - Weird audio problem - maybe phonon related

Damn...I cleaned my pacman cache as well, I can't downgrade.

About the SB chipset I don't clearly remember, because I've done a lot of things and when I was totally pissed off I plugged my headset in the posterior jack and it worked neutral
I remember that I have blacklisted snd_soc_rt5640 and played with:
rmmod snd_hda_intel
modprobe snd_hda_intel position_fix=1/0

then I've tested various Hz settings in speaker-test between 48k and 96k.

If you need some command output just ask smile

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan

What might also help is aplay -L maybe the default device is set to something wonky

Damn, that's beautyful. Is there something like this to revert some bad decisions in my past? big_smile

    HDA ATI HDMI, HDMI 5
    HDMI Audio Output

I must advise you that this GPU is something mixed. I know people that run z97 fatal1ty pro with realtek audio driver. I don't know if it's fully comparable with a discrete recon3d adapter.

Re: ALSA - Weird audio problem - maybe phonon related

Downgrading ALSA doesn't work. Same output:

"/home/paolo/.config/kde.org/libphonon.conf"
libpaths ("/usr/lib/qt5/plugins", "/usr/lib/qt/plugins", "/usr/bin")
void BackendSelection::load() "/usr/lib/qt/plugins/phonon4qt5_backend" does not exist
void BackendSelection::load() "/usr/bin/phonon4qt5_backend" does not exist
qooooooooo
Disabling PulseAudio integration. Context connection failed: Connection refused

Re: ALSA - Weird audio problem - maybe phonon related

$ pacman -Qo /usr/lib/qt5/plugins/phonon4qt5_backend/
/usr/lib/qt5/plugins/phonon4qt5_backend/ is owned by phonon-qt5-gstreamer 4.8.2-1
$

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky
