[SOLVED] No sound in Unreal Tournament 2004 (Linux version)

I just patched my UT2004 install (gog.com) for linux support with the UT Mega Pack. Everything is running fine, except I have no sound.

padsp and aoss don't work
The command line output says this

attempt to connect to server failed

This seems relevant. It looks like it wants to connect to a JACK server.

Before you ask, YES I made a symlink (openal.so -> /usr/lib/libopenal.so) in the system directory.

I found some fixes that worked for other people, but not for me.

EDIT: And when I start JACK, it crashes on startup:

Openal package provides libopenal.so. Please rebuild openal (https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/47136#comment141224) and then test the game.
Maybe it will solve the problem of sound.

download 0001-Fix-the-allow-resampler-check-for-ALSA.patch, 0002-Better-handle-inexact-ALSA-period-counts.patch, PKGBUILD and save in opengl-test
makepkg -sci
install dependence

Well JACK should work, as I actually got it to work with pulse.

Well, I installed blablo's patch and while still using JACK => same crash.
Then I added "drivers=pulse,alsa" to the oconfig file and BAM it shows in pavucontrol

But, I have no sound since it's using my other sound card and UT is being a ***** and not allowing me to alt+tab and the kde selector thing doesn't show devices, only "PulseAudio Sound Server", so I can't switch the device

Switch the order around if you intend to use pulse anyway, that wasn't clear from your initial post. (or leave pulse as the sole driver like drivers=pulse)

Phonon should show all cards as recognized by pulseaudio usually unless it got confused by the attempts of starting jack (however switching the device there won't help you with UT). Is there no way to open a windowed mode or similar? e.g. Alt+Enter, F10, F11 and friends (what should definitely work is switching to another VT and using the PA console clients to switch a combination of pacmd list-sink-inputs, pacmd list-sinks, pacmd move-sink-input SINKINPUT SINK should do the trick) .

Woopsie, my mistake. I already have pulse as the first entry in there. Problem is I somehow can't change the order of the devices in pavucontrol or in the KDE system settings. I got it to work by switching desktops as soon as the UT window spawned but it's still bad that I have to do that.

I have a internal audio (Intel), my USB headset, and when I start jack, a PA sink for that. It would be nice if I could set the JACK sink as first priority, the USB headset as second and the internal audio as last priority and when one gets added with higher priority, automatically switch all outputs to that. Is there any way to do this?

Well, I'm already running it in windowed mode, but unfortunately it seems to catch all keyboard inputs and alt+tab doesn't work.
What I could try is, make a script that moves the input for me automatically
I'll see.

But what I don't get is, why does phonon "mess up" even when I stopped JACK? They should really have a dropdown box where you can select Pulse/ALSA/JACK/etc

too long post edits ftw... I don't think that much control is possible, however since I'd assume you use jack for a very specific few of applications, setting these to the jack sink and starting jack before said applications should make pulse remember that setting, and if you set your USB device as the fallback it should be used for every other stream, but if the fallback is unavailable it should fallback to internal.

Technically it shouldn't be too hard to write a script or use an application that can move all sink-inputs on any of these events.

But that is for another thread, if you consider your original issue as solved, don't forget to mark it as such in the title.
