[SOLVED] Nuked ALSA - no sound anymore

Hello,

I had a problem earlier this day, long story short, my audio jack speakers didn't output sound of a certain application and after failing to understand how to work with the alsa tools and configurations, I reinstalled alsa-utils, and the alsa related libraries. I also ran locate alsa | sudo rm -rf (hence the "Nuked" in the title) (I was very frustrated as my name suggests).

After that, no applications worked with my speakers anymore.

I hope someone is willing to help me.

My USB Headset works, but I'd like to have my speakers back working again too.

When typing in console aplay -L, I get this:

The only audio devices that are plugged in are my USB headset and my 2 speakers with subwoofer.

I installed pulseaudio, pulseaudio-alsa and pavucontrol to test all the devices.

In the "Configuration" tab of pavucontrol, I have following options:

My "Output Devices" tab of pavucontrol looks like this:

I tried all options in pavucontrol, unfortunately nothing is producing sound.

Here is a picture of my alsamixer:

Things I tried:
- Rebooting several times
- As stated earlier, reinstalled alsa-utils, alsa-plugins and libraries
- tried to run speaker-test, no sound is being played, not even through USB

Once again, I hope someone is willing to help me.

Kind regards.

Re: [SOLVED] Nuked ALSA - no sound anymore

post the output of

pacmd list-cards
pacmd list-sinks

What exactly did you "rm -rf" (why would you even do that?...) run

pacman -Qk

to check if you've removed something still needed by any given package

From what I see from the screenshots none of the ports on the output tab are correct they should all point somewhere else, post the output I've mentioned above. It is very likely that with the suicide bomb of removing EVERYTHING that has alsa somewhere in the file name you nuked quite a bit of info that would be used by pulse or anything remotely having to do with alsa ( this is literally the worst course of action one could take in hopes of resolving something like this...)

Edit: I just checked as well and rm doesn't read stdin so you were lucky to likely not have nuked anything.

That is a list of locate alsa on my system. You can see that there are a few things not related to alsa that were possibly removed by your command. Never do a rm -rf unless you are 1000% sure about what you are going to delete. With that said, I am trying to reproduce what you have done in a virtualbox. I will let you know my findings.

Also, you said you reinstalled alsa-utils and then you said you ran...

locate alsa | sudo rm -rf

This would blow away your reinstall. Did you mean you reinstalled after blowing away everything?

Re: [SOLVED] Nuked ALSA - no sound anymore

Well I installed alsa-utils on a fresh arch install.

I then ran your command...

locate alsa | sudo rm -rf

It did not delete a single thing. I ran...

locate alsa

Afterwards and all the files were still there. So, I do not believe you actually Nuked anything. I did notice something in your screenshots of alsamixer. They are at full volume but down at the bottom it still says MM instead of 00. It may be possible that they are somehow still muted. I'm not sure. I would suggest going out to a command prompt with ALT+F2. Logging in and running alsamixer. Be sure they are really not muted and do a sound-test from there.

Re: [SOLVED] Nuked ALSA - no sound anymore

Hi guys, sorry for the delay and thanks for the replies.

I got my sound back working. I am not sure what I did to get it back working.

V1del wrote:

I just checked as well and rm doesn't read stdin so you were lucky to likely not have nuked anything.

I ran the command

locale alsa | xargs sudo rm -rf

, I forgot the xargs part. But that doesn't matter, because I did that before I reinstalled alsa-utils and everything else.

Thanks for trying to help, ChriG

Now that my sound is back working, I am still concerned about what you told me, V1del.

I hope you >can't< tell me something that is wrong about this *g*. Thanks V1del.

Kind regards.

Re: [SOLVED] Nuked ALSA - no sound anymore

I'd usually not associate a line-out as the default output port for normal audio output, but if it works for you then that's fine. I'd still suggest you run a pacman -Qk to make sure you didn't really break something you might need later. If you consider this thread as solved for you, don't forget to prepend [SOLVED] to the title (and if the original issue that lead you to execute this rampage, resurfaces, make a new thread before you kill your sound again wink )
