startx not switching to a new X display

I've noticed last night that xorg seeemed to update as well as nvidia. When I run startx the tty freezes and doesn't open up a X session. However, it seems to be running the desktop in the background. ps -a gives my desktop ratpoison, along with dropbox and owncloud (these apps start when x starts).

Here is my xorg.conf:

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "layout"
    Screen 0 "nvidia"
    Inactive "intel"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Driver "nvidia"
    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
    # e.g. BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Device "nvidia"
    Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "intel"
    Driver "modesetting"
    Option "AccelMethod" "none"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "intel"
    Device "intel"
EndSection

and the log file from /var/log/xorg.0.log

Re: startx not switching to a new X display

I've reconfigured the files to be inside /etc/xorg.conf.d as per the wiki, but am getting the same behaviour. Anything else I can try?

Re: startx not switching to a new X display

I am having the same problem.  I have been able to determine it is xf86-input-evdev-2.10.0-2 and xorg-server-1.18.0-3 that is the problem.  I can upgrade nvidia and nvidia-utils independently of these packages and I still get a display, but as soon as I install these (which require each other, so I haven't tested them separately).

Here is my Xorg.0.log

While not exactly a "fix", one can simply downgrade if you have the old pkg files.
Using

cd /var/cache/pacman/pkg/
sudo pacman -U xorg-server-1.17.4-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xf86-input-evdev-2.10.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xf86-input-synaptics-1.8.3-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

was able to fix the problem for me.

I hope somebody else will have some more insight into the problem, but I'm just going to blacklist xorg-server upgrades for now.

Edit:  I see others have had the same problem and it seems to be an xorg-server-1.18.0 problem.  See https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=205421 and https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/47151

Re: startx not switching to a new X display

That downgrade worked for me as well, but I'm not sure how I can keep the system like this for too long.

Re: startx not switching to a new X display

So you guys are not running a display manager correct?

Re: startx not switching to a new X display

Try to change the "Screen 0" line to "Screen 1" in the ServerLayout section of the xorg.conf you use. There is a suspicious error message about Screen 1 in the Xorg.0.log file that was posted.

Are all those settings in the xorg.conf needed to get the combination of Intel + nvidia graphics to work? Perhaps there's a way to get some more automatic detection of Xorg into it by deleting something. Perhaps just "Screen" instead of "Screen 1" works (the xorg.conf man page says the number is optional).

Re: startx not switching to a new X display

Correct - I'm not running a display manager - just a .xinitrc and startx here.

Re: startx not switching to a new X display

Hi,
I startx from my .bash_profile like so, and have no issues anymore. Before I used lightdm as DM. Now using just i3 as WM and login straight from tty.

[[ -z $DISPLAY && $XDG_VTNR -eq 1 ]] && exec startx

Re: startx not switching to a new X display

Holding back on xorg at the moment with IgnorePkg, but will investigate when I get more time. Really need X at the moment to run virtualbox for a time dependent project so don't want to mess around.

Re: startx not switching to a new X display

I can confirm that switching

screen 0 "nvidia"

to

screen 1 "nvidia"

in the xorg.conf did allow the display to work properly on my system.  This has been discussed at https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/47151 .  The disadvantage of using screen 1 is that some programs apparently don't operate properly  (like using some graphical login managers.  I also just use startx with a proper .xinitrc), although I haven't had this problem yet.  I'll probably stick with the screen 1 workaround for now, but I hope that it is fixed soon.

As an addendum, I did try just

screen "nvidia"

and it failed just as with screen 0.

Thanks Ropid.

Re: startx not switching to a new X display

Just thought I'd let you all know I found my first application that doesn't play nice with using "screen 1".  vlc doesn't display properly.  Instead of trying to fix this, I've decided to downgrade until this is fixed.

Re: startx not switching to a new X display

Nvidia's driver documentation seems to suggest using a newer, simplified xorg configuration for xorg 1.17.2 and higher.
This does work, but with the same issues using screen 1 brings. (Does make switching between 1.17 and 1.18 relatively painless though!)
