Migrate UNIX environment to Arch

Hey everybody,

I have a UNIX SCO OpenServer setup on an old HP server (circa '98). How difficult would it be to migrate this entire setup to Arch Linux in a virtual machine?

What would like to do exactly ? Running the SCO server in a virtual machine under Archlinux? Does the server use a x86 processor it should be easy.

If it is a server, I assume you don't need advanced graphic capability and that very basic graphic support will be enough. VirtualBox provides additions to integrate the two desktops but they aren't available for SCO; but it shouldn't be much a concern for a server. The server must understand the VirtualBox hardware (especially the network card) but it is able to emulate very standard network cards.

I assume that the server run on rather standard x86 architecture.

Not too much work:Just get yourself a dd image of the server and fire up a virtual machine using a converted version (e. g. with VBoxManage convertdd for VirtualBox) and give it a try.

Sco openserver isn't the best supported os nowerdays afaik, so maybe you should a well consider a migration to another os.

I'm also converting an SCO system. Instead of emulating through a VM I've constructed all the software on the new system. Moving to 64 bit will make a big improvement in the operation.
