I'm writing this because ever since the new nvidia drivers have been updated to 358.16 steam now crashes - especially when someone try's to restore a steam backup file the reason why I know this is because I tried the nvidia-358 drivers on ubuntu and it basically did the same thing but not with the nvidia 355 drivers could whomever maintains the nvidia 355 drivers place the package as a "nvidia-lts" if possible until nvidia or valve finds a fix for the random crashes..... Is anybody else experiencing the same problem but not with the nvidia 355?

Yeah, I have the same problem -- Steam will just randomly crash for no reason, started after I updated to nvidia 358. Did a downgrade to 355 and xorg 1.17 (with all dependencies of course) and Steam is stable again. Something's up with either nvidia, xorg, or both.

I also seem to be having this problem.

I think its mainly a nvidia problem since it didn't happen with the 355 drivers - I've posted a new help thread at nvidia's website here https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topi … -related-/
If anyone is having a similar problem - you could register on there website and mention that you have the same issue....

Currently i don't have nvidia hardware around to try and see myself, but would it be difference in cached shaders in hidden home folder, where it tries to use older incompatible ?

Same issue for me here - GeForce GTX 960 with 358.16-2.1.

Works here, although I haven't tried a backup restore yet. Steam itself and games I tested (skullgirls mainly) worked fine

I have had this happen randomly during the last days. I am currently running x with logverbose 6 argument and just waiting for another one of these random crashes. Once that happens I will also post the error report nvidia asks for on their forum.
Offline
I'm having the infamous "ERROR: ld.so: object '~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/gameoverlayrenderer.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded (wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32): ignored." Obviously, I deleted the recommended libraries without any effect. I also tried removing the whole steam folder.
Could this be due to the same bug listed in this thread?
I own an Asus laptop with optimus Nvidia 610M / Intel graphic cards. The same happens no matter if I try to run the game with either card.

^ That error is harmless.
I had a few random segfaults in steam earlier today (despite nothing on my system changing between my last gaming session and then), recompiling nvidia-libgl seems to have fixed it for me, but since I don't know what caused the problem in the first place, I can't be sure it won't reoccur.

It's not harmless, the game doesn't run at all.

The game might not run, but you'd get that error even if it did. It's just the linker noisily refusing to load a library that won't work. After it has failed loading that file, it will silently load ~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_64/gameoverlayrenderer.so instead.
It is not the cause of the segfaults in libnvidia-glcore.so.358.16.

MartinZ, there is a fix for that on the Arch Wiki. Search on this page for gameoverlayrenderer.so. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/St … ime_issues

Thanks a lot andrewd18, I know that fix but it doesn't solve my problem.
I finally fixed it installing steam-libs from [alucryd-multilib] and running steam with native libs (STEAM_RUNTIME=0 steam). It's not really the fix I was hoping since I had to install lots of 32-bit libs, but at least it works. I guess I'll uninstall everything when I finish that game.

I'm also getting occasional Steam crashes at seemingly random times since the recent nvidia and xorg update. It isn't preventing me from playing games or anything, though. It has only happened a few times while I was browsing the store or interacting with steam's main window in some other way.
Here's the output from journalctl -r on the most recent one:

I'm starting to suspect whether the culprit is actually steam and not nvidia though I'm not sure - it seems to crash when someone try's to restore a backup file but however when the files are in the steam backup folder and not on an external Hard Drive it crashes as well in the same manner -but since others have experienced problems with steam store then should a bug be filed with steam support? I'm also suspecting whether or not is steam compatible with the new abi/api of nvidia's driver since initial support was apparently added for wayland if I've read correctly....

It will crash without fail here if I try to change the screenshot folder or set taskbar preferences. A little window pops up, click OK (or cancel) and it crashes resulting in the same stack trace as posted by carkasjak. Maybe you could see if you can reproduce that.
No crash with the nouveau drivers for the record.

It's not just doing certain actions that trigger it for me. I can have Steam running in the background on my games list normally with nothing going on not even focused and it'll just disappear at random.
Something strange is definitely wrong, and only reverting to nvidia355 will fix it.

Anyone know when nvidia is going to push out a fix for this? I'm trying to decide if I need to figure out how to do a downgrade or if I can wait a bit longer. I've already put up with this for a few days. It's pretty hellish at times because Steam is my main method of communication with a lot of friends and it often crashes while I'm typing a message, but I don't actually use Steam for much else. I think I can get by using different chats with these friends until it's fixed if it won't take long.

I downgraded the xorg update to 1.17 and the nvidia drivers to 355. Steam & friends work fine. I entered /var/cache/pacman/pkg/ and ran (your exact packages may vary):

Is there anything being done or at least acknowledged about this bug? It doesn't seem to affect everyone, just a minority of nvidia users, and it seems to be ignored because of it.

Would love to know the same. I have been following this thread and I would hate to have to downgrade so much for this annoying bug.

I'm having horrendous crashing issues. I'm not even playing games. Half-typed messages to friends in the chat have been lost hundreds of times now. Sometimes just clicking on a Steam window results in a crash. A fix for this is needed. I'm losing it. I was going to downgrade, but it sounds as though that would be a very painful and messy process due to how many things depend on the current nvidia driver. Even without interaction Steam crashes. Sometimes I'll go to bed with it open and wake up to see it's no longer open. I'm using a GTX 560ti.
Offline
I have the same problem.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960
I might just be imagining things, but it seems like I crash every time someone sends me a message.
-------------
I'm using this very simple python script to have steam start up immediately after it crashes:
#!/bin/python
import os;
while(True):
os.system("steam");-------------
I am considering to downgrade as well. Good thing we can get older versions of software from the archive.
