Pulseaudio headphones appear plugged in all the time

Please, someone help me before I shoot myself in the leg. Some time ago pulseaudio stopped detecting when the headphones are plugged in or out. Now they appear as plugged in all the time, even if they aren't and the built in speaker is always unavailable. If I change the output from pavucontrol both the speakers and the headphones work all right but it's very annoying to have to do it all the time.
One thing I noticed is that acpi_listen doesn't always detect plugging or unplugging the headphones. All I see from it is `jack/microphone MICROPHONE plug` and this happens only some of the times. `journalctl -f` reports this on the microphone event - `ACPI group/action undefined: jack/microphone / MICROPHONE`.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Re: Pulseaudio headphones appear plugged in all the time

If you fire up alsamixer and select your sound card, are there any "PIN" controls.  Ones that don't have a magnitude associated with them, but rather a binary value -- on/off  ; enabled/disabled ?  Things like "Automute" or "Headphone detect"?  If you do, note their value and then experiment with them.  If things deteriorate, set them back to their defaults smile

There is only "Auto-mute Mode", which, when enabled, will keep internal speakers muted after I select them from `pavucontrol` because they as listed as unavailable there.
