Re: Arch linux ps3 project

This kernel locks up when the USB driver loads.

Good thing I got the hunky one Makes me consider if linux on the old, fat PS3's is still going to be supported... Anyways, I'm hoping to start on this during my winter break or summer next year.

Re: Arch linux ps3 project

Wii is PPC32, PS3 is PPC64, Wii is missing Altivec, PS3 includes Altivec, Arch-PPC developers are dead, this sucks :\
Some of us could work together and make a full PowerPC Arch distro hosting PPC32 and PPC64 packages and kernels. I'd open a Google Code project if I could find the create a project page.....Anyone who wants to help please tell me!

Something I just realized: The problem is for PPC32 with altivec.

Re: Arch linux ps3 project

On a powerpc system, programs that utilize less than 3gb of RAM and don't make use of 64-bit precision will actually run more slowly when compiled as 32-bit than when compiled as 64-bit, because more cache space will be used to store the same data. This is different from x86-64, where 64-bit is almost always faster. When using the Power architecture, it usually makes the most sense to run a 64-bit kernel with a mainly 32-bit userland and only compile really heavyweight stuff as power64. So a port to power64 could probably use most of the work in place already for arch-ppc.

Re: Arch linux ps3 project

Anyone have a clue how to compile a new pacman.static for ppc64? That way we can add it to the gentoo minimal install cd and have at the very least a nice rescue cd for ps3 arch, if not a very strong jumping off point for a net-install cd.

Btw, I am interested in seeing other people's kernels as they update them. I tried to make a ps3 one for 2.6.33-rc1, but it somehow came out like 10x bigger than all the other ones I've seen. Is it supposed to be compressed or something? I don't know much about kernel compiling.

Re: Arch linux ps3 project

Ever since Sony decided to stop including the OtherOS feature in the Slims, most of the Cell development has stopped. Well atleast open source anyway. I myself reformatted and instead just got a PSP. So I don't think many people would be interested in a PPC64 port for our beloved PS3's anymore.

Re: Arch linux ps3 project

Meh, whatever. I have a minimal install iso for arch on the PS3 made now. I'll have a basic install CD in a few days. Hopefully someone will care, even if not many.

Re: Arch linux ps3 project

Hey thanks for all the work guys, I'm getting myself a ps3 to try this out. Thought of giving gentoo/psubuntu a try, but as a desktop/laptop Arch user, I would rather use Arch.

box1: Arch (linux-3.17-rc5)
box2: Gentoo (linux-3.17-rc5)

Re: Arch linux ps3 project

Definitely an interesting read. I just installed xubuntu 9.10 on a ps3 for a relative partially just to see if it really worked and was curious as to the possibilities in regards to Arch.  Unfortunately I don't have a PS3 myself yet so I can't join the effort.

Re: Arch linux ps3 project

I know this thread is super old now, but I just got a PS3 Slim (CECH-2001A) and I shipped it to someone in Georgia, USA to downgrade it for me. Once I get it back I might want to try and install linux on it, and I've tried out Arch and liked it a lot. Can anyone offer a progress update? Does it install well from PettitBoot? Was that baseinstall ISO ever posted anywhere?

Re: Arch linux ps3 project

I thought Sony "fixed" that.  Or do you mean that the downgrade reverts the machine back to a release before Sony broke faith with consumers (again)?
If you cannot boot an alternate OS, I think you are hosed.

Edit:  Leaving this open as this is the most appropriate place to discuss this.
Edit2:  Also, PPC development is dead.  Arch is an X86 / X86_64 distro.

Yeah with custom firmware for the PS3 you can restore the usability of the "OtherOS" functions. I think in OFW (Official FW) 4.21 they removed the OtherOS stuff. I just shipped my PS3 Slim (got it used) to someone in Georgia to get it downgraded, and that should allow me to do some awesome things with it. I can't wait to get it back! Kholddagger a few posts up back in 2010 said s/he had a base install CD s/he made... I wanted to see if I could install Arch from that just to play around with it on older hardware. Even if ArchPPC development is basically dead I still wanna give it a try if I can.
