nvidia output off center

So, I'm having an issue with the nvidia driver.  The machine has a GeForce GTX 970, and is being used as an HDTV/gaming machine.  I've got it run through an Onkyo TX NR-626 receiver.  When I am using the nvidia driver and I have the output set to 1080p, the output on my screen is offset to the left about two inches and up about a centimeter, with a black bar on the right side and bottom and the left side cut off and a sliver of the top cut off--almost as if there were an overscan.

I've tried a whole lot of different things with some really interesting (weird) results:

- With a resolution below 1080p, the display is correct and aligned centered.
- When I change Color Space to YCbCr444 in nvidia-settings > GP 0 > DFP-1 > Controls, the black bars on the right and bottom turn dark green.
- With nouveau, the display is correct.  (Note that the EDID reported by xrandr with nouveau matches the one reported when using nvidia)
- If I switch to another TTY running a terminal, the display is correct.
- When I run the computer directly to the TV and skip the receiver, the display is correct.
- When I replace the card with a GeForce GTX-750SC and use the nvidia-304xx drivers, the display is correct.
- When I use the same GTX-750SC with the nvidia driver, the display  is incorrect and shows the same offset.

I highly doubt this is truly an overscan issue, not only because the problem goes away on other drivers, but also as I've fiddled with my TV and receiver settings to no end and am 99.99999% sure they are both properly configured for 1:1 mapping.  It seems to be a problem with specifically the combination of the nvidia driver and the receiver, as weird as that sounds.  Note that I've put loads of sources including many different computers thorough this receiver and never had problems before.

I've pretty much exhausted all my ideas.  Does anyone have any ideas that are worth trying?

Re: nvidia output off center

I have a similar problem. I found something related here, but no fix so far.

There is a difference between knowing the path and walking the path.

Re: nvidia output off center

Thanks for the reply, but I don't think that this issue is related to mine.  This issue appears to be that the driver is running weird resolutions over VGA specifically.  My issue is not a resolution issue but a pixel mapping issue, and is not happening over VGA but rather over HDMI (also happens on my display port).  It appears that the nvidia driver is not mapping pixels correctly for my receiver, but I don't know these technologies well enough to even know if that makes sense.

What's super odd about this is that the nvidia-304xx drivers worked just fine when I was using a card that supported them.  While the nvidia drivers should have worked for that card, with the nvidia drivers I get the same weird offset.  So it seems like something broke between the 304xx branch and the stable branch, but I'd like to be a little more certain this isn't a configuration issue before I go submit a bug report.

Re: nvidia output off center

Hi,
Have you found a solution? I think i have the same Problem with Nvidia GTX960->AVR (Onkyo Tx-SR608)->Tv (LG 42Lw570S). Some black Pixel on the Right side and missing Pixel on the left side. Top and Bottom are ok. I don't have that issue with my Laptop with gt330m and 340 driver.
I haven't seen your post so i created a new one:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=208171

The best Solution i have so far is activating Overscan on Tv and using Underscan/changing ViewPortOut. That gives me at least only a few Pixel missing on the Bottom.

Re: nvidia output off center

When I went back and looked at this, I believe FernandoBasso was right about the issues being related (I meant to post a follow-up but I must have forgotten).  It appears a bug was introduced in a recent version of the nvidia driver, and unfortunately, the main Linux driver contact at nvidia seems to be out on paternity leave.

I was able to get this issue fixed by downgrading my nvidia drivers.  Unfortunately I can't give you the specific version information, since I have since switched to nouveau on my Arch build and Windows for gaming (gotta have that GTA V).  However, I can tell you that it was a huge pain in the ass--a number of packages had to be downgraded to very specific versions, and it took me a few hours of just downgrading packages and restarting X before I finally found a combination that solved the issue.

If it helps, it appears the bug was introduced around v 355.11 of the nvidia drivers.

EDIT: I just went and read your post, and one thing I will say is that if you are facing the same issue as me, it is NOT an overscan issue and working with modelines/overscan settings is a waste of time that will not fix the issue.  The driver version itself is bad and you need to downgrade to a version before the bug was introduced.

Re: nvidia output off center

Yeah it is that bug. You might be intrested in the nvidia-352 package in aur if you want to switch back from nouveau.
