I use Plasma 5.5 and everytime I log in a plasma session the sound symbol in the system tray is missing. In fact there is a gap between two other symbols. This problem occurs sind Plasma 5.3 or even earlier. I occurs almost on every boot. When I adjust the options of the system tray/ toggle the category misc, the the sound icon is showing. This is really a strange behaviour, which is not occuring e.g. in openSUSE. So I think it is an Arch related problem.

I have the same issue but with the network manager widget. I use the same method to bring it back.

If you're using "plasma-pa", it seems to be a problem with Qt. I think it's gonna be fixed soon.

Try deleting the panel you have and add a default one. It worked for me!
Good luck!

Thanks for the answers. It seems, that it is an upstream problem in qt. It should get fixed in QT 5.6.
