well just try using noatun or juk in kde, they should use arts.. what issues do you have?

Well i'm using KDE 3.2 and 2.6.3 and Juk plays mp3s fine. So i'm guessing arts works? And I couldn't see any options to change what sound system it uses. I'm using via 82cxx.
Hopefully not an incompatability with your card

I remember reading in another thread that this is a known issue with kde and new kernels (I think). The thing to do is go to the control centre in kde and under sound section select alsa. If it doesn't work, try searching for the thread...it's here somewhere.

I've encountered the same problem. Top showed me artsd it used 90% of my cpu power. And changing the sound system to ALSA instead of autodetect solved the problem.
