Can't boot or even access emergency console after update

I made normal updates to my Arch Linux system yesterday via 

pacman -Syu

during which I had to confirm two updates if I wanted to replace the packages with different sounding ones. Thinking "Looks like the packages have been moved into a namespace. This shouldn't be a problem..." I accepted. Unfortunately I don't know the pacakges names anymore but I think one of them was something with "sulogin".

Fast forward today: I want to boot again and get greeted by the following error message:

Welcome to emergency mode! After logging in type [...]

Cannot open access to console, the root account is locked.
See sulogin(8) man page for more details.

Press Enter to continue.

If I press enter it just repeats the same message. So in other words the update seems to have even brought down emergency mode...
I am an intermediate to advanced linux user, but this is beyond my capabilities.

Anyone else having that problem with the latest updates?

please provide /var/log/pacman.log

You prob have to boot with a AL installation iso for that, check wiki for details.

edit:

sulogin is in the util-linux pacakge which was updated last on november 27

So you do have access to console now? Can you reinstall signon?
If you don't have console access, I think the first step is to chroot into your system.

signon was indeed replaced by signond .

It seems a bit weird that a DBUS-service can interfere with emergency mode.
does everything work as intended if you chroot into to your installation ?
also try to get journalctl output from one of the failed boots.

Cannot open access to console, the root account is locked.

So is the root account actually locked? Does root has a password? (In some case password-less root can be considered lock IIRC)

Also you see no other error or "[Failed]" before you were dropped intin emergency mode?

Well... I am currently writing from within my system, so it seems fixed, but I don't actually understand what the problem was.
I did the following:

  1. I booted into an arch live usb and mounted and arch-chrooted into my system. This worked without any problems.

  2. Because of what tom.ty89 said, I decided to check on my root account and found that there was actually a password set for it. Not sure why, probably a remnant from the installation, while I was still figuring out how to set up sudo.

  3. I removed the password and locked the root account

  4. I rebooted to check if this would let me at least get into the emergency shell

To my astonishment it not just got me into the shell, but I was greeted by my KDE loading screen and shortly afterwards my desktop.
I mainly have two questions now:

  1. Shouldn't I have gotten a prompt asking me for a password for the emergency shell because of the set password?

  2. Apparently the cause for dropping me into emergency shell suddenty disappeared? Or was the cause the root password? If so isn't this a bug?

In regards to the journal I only found the following regarding the emergency shell:

systemd[303]: emergency.service: Failed at step EXEC spawning /bin/plymouth: No such file or directory

I looked at the journal a bit more and found the following:

Dec 21 12:07:00 DESKTOP systemd[1]: Stopped Network Manager.
Dec 21 12:07:00 DESKTOP systemd[1]: Reached target Network.
Dec 21 12:07:00 DESKTOP systemd[1]: Stopped D-Bus System Message Bus.

The failed mount was my data HDD which was locked because of my Windows 10 installation screwing it up...
Would a failed fstab mount drop you into emergency shell?

Okay that takes care of the issue of dropping into emergency shell, but still didn't answer the question why I couldn't access the emergency shell:

Shouldn't I have gotten a prompt asking me for a password for the emergency shell because of the set root password?

You locked the root account (why?), so you can't access the root account, but the emergency shell only allows access via root account I'd assume. (An unlocked root account will lead to the emergency shell asking for the password for said root account to answer your question)
