In both outputs says something about kernel driver in use: i915. But, I'm not sure if that means it's right. I'm loading the i915 module in my mkinitcpio.conf, so I don't know if I'm "forcing" that module. Who knows? Maybe my kernel is using a different driver and I could get a better performance.

EDIT: Marked as solved :)

Re: [SOLVED]: How do I know which Intel Graphic Chipset my laptop has?

According to the manual and specification it should be a Intel GMA 4500MHD. Though all my search for that graphics mention the "intel" driver not "i915".

BTW: I have NO experience with Intel graphics so perhaps wait for someone more qualified to answer big_smile

Well, yes. I didn't explain myself properly. I'm wondering if that's the correct module, not driver.

Where did you get that "manual and specification"?

Re: [SOLVED]: How do I know which Intel Graphic Chipset my laptop has?

Drivers have several different components. When it comes to Intel:

- the kernel module is "i915" for all Intel graphics
- the 2D component is "intel" for all Intel graphics
- the 3D component is "i915" (for i8xx, i915, i945 and 3xxx) or "i965" (for everything newer than that)

(let's ignore i810 here, for simplicity's sake smile)

Thanks for the clarification :). So, according to that, having installed xf86-video-intel is all that I need? How do I now if my laptop is using the i915 or i965 component for 3D (supposing that my laptop is 4xxx according to anonymous_user)?

I wonder because I was reading the Intel article in the wiki, and the HW acceleration part draw my attention. And I'm not sure if my chipset actually supports that or not.

Also, because I'm having some issues with flash, to correct diagnose the problem I need more info about my graphic card :)

And intel-dri, it contains the 3D component, but you already have that, as it's a dependency of xf86-video-intel.

Well, 4500 is not among the stuff I listed for i915, so you're using i965.

Depends. There's 4500M and 4500MHD, only the latter has a hardware decoder. Install libva and run vainfo, it'll tell you if your chip has hardware decoding. Edit: Oops, installing libva won't do, you need a special branch, so install the packages that the wiki page lists.

I doubt those are connected to the graphic card. Unless one is using VDPAU (which you're not), flash does pretty much everything in software.

Re: [SOLVED]: How do I know which Intel Graphic Chipset my laptop has?

After following the suggestion, before:

$ vainfo
libva: VA-API version 0.32.0
libva: va_getDriverName() returns 0
libva: Trying to open /usr/lib/dri/i965_drv_video.so
libva: va_openDriver() returns 0
vainfo: VA-API version: 0.32 (libva 1.0.15)
vainfo: Driver version: Intel i965 driver - 1.0.15
vainfo: Supported profile and entrypoints
VAProfileMPEG2Simple : VAEntrypointVLD
VAProfileMPEG2Main : VAEntrypointVLD

After installing libva-g45-h264 and libva-driver-intel-g45-h264:

$ vainfo
libva: libva version 0.32.0
libva: va_getDriverName() returns 0
libva: Trying to open /usr/lib/dri/i965_drv_video.so
libva: va_openDriver() returns 0
vainfo: VA API version: 0.32
vainfo: Driver version: Intel i965 driver - 1.0.14
vainfo: Supported profile and entrypoints
      VAProfileMPEG2Simple            :	VAEntrypointVLD
      VAProfileMPEG2Main              :	VAEntrypointVLD
      VAProfileH264Baseline           :	VAEntrypointVLD
      VAProfileH264Main               :	VAEntrypointVLD
      VAProfileH264High               :	VAEntrypointVLD

So, I guess it worked. Anyway, I still don't know how you are supposed to know which chipset the intel graphic card has tongue

Its probably easier just to look up the specifications for your computer. I find yours by just googling for "Dell Studio 1555 specifications" but you could just go to the Dell support website and search there.

I know, the problem is that not all Dell Laptops are created equally, so simply searching sometimes is not enough. Still it's a good option that most times helps, maybe I should have start from there. I was looking a way for doing it from the laptop itself.

Thanks, we have the same graphic card btw :P.

After all this responses, my conclusion is that there isn't a "generic" way to know which chipset do you have or the exact model of your graphic card (I was thinking in something like everlast or device manager in Windows).

Anyway, thanks for your help, no doubt this is going to be useful in the future :)

Well its not likely a particular model can have different Intel graphics. Furthermore your laptop should have a service tag number so you can find the information specifically about your laptop.

After all this responses, my conclusion is that there isn't a "generic" way to know which chipset do you have or the exact model of your graphic card (I was thinking in something like everlast or device manager in Windows).

I think it depends on your graphics chipset. It seems Intel's names are rather generic and you would have to lookup the product identifer number as mentioned by ewaller. NVIDIA gives better information:

02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF114 [GeForce GTX 560] (rev a1)

Re: [SOLVED]: How do I know which Intel Graphic Chipset my laptop has?

I know, the problem is that not all Dell Laptops are created equally, so simply searching sometimes is not enough.

Well its not likely a particular model can have different Intel graphics. Furthermore your laptop should have a service tag number so you can find the information specifically about your laptop.

Each of those devices has a 32 bit hexadecimal identifier presented as [xxxx:xxxx]  The first four digits are the Vendor ID.  The last four digits are the Product ID.  In the example from my system, note all the Intel products.  The vendor ID for all Intel products is 8086 (Cute, eh?).  The product ID is vendor defined and is supposed to identify the product;  sometimes it is used to identify products that use the same driver.  Regardless, the 32 number is used to associate the hardware with the appropriate kernel module.

Thanks, that's very useful.

Re: [SOLVED]: How do I know which Intel Graphic Chipset my laptop has?

I know this post is a quite old but I think it's worth sharing the information I have come across.

@pablox:

Considering your output

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2a42] (rev 07)

VendorId: 8086
Chipset ID: 2a42

as ewaller said.

Then if you follow this link you will find out your chipset, which is: GMA 4500MHD
