Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi everyone! This is my first post on the forums. I attempted to install Arch Linux about 2 years ago without help of the forums (suffice to say I failed miserably) and decided to use a more simplistic OS. This December, I decided to revisit Arch Linux and after 4 installs (and a lot of Google searching), was finally able get everything configured to my liking.

I would just like to take the time to say thank you to everyone who takes the time to keep these forums alive and thriving; they have been an immense help this past week.

Cheers!

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi all. First post! Thought I might introduce myself a bit. Planning my very first Arch install tomorrow on the first day of the New Year (I'm in New Zealand, so New Year's Eve here at the moment).

I was a long time Windows user up until recently. I dabbled with Red Hat back in my university days when I was studying to be an IT tech (and paid $110 for the discs and manual ye gads!). Then ran Ubuntu for a while on a rather ancient laptop about 7 years ago. Currently sitting on Mint 17.3. Found it rather amusing that my full switch to Linux was to a release nicknamed Rosa. I call that serendipity!

I gave up the IT dream a long time ago after I realised I have zero patience for user stupidity (I blame my parents and having to fix their computer All. The. Time.). I was a web designer before 'retiring' to focus on family and my kids ( I have five, yes five lol!) and my career has since taken a very definite different direction (undisturbed physiologic birth rights and advocacy - didn't see that coming).

I am absolutely loving Linux and really looking forward to getting stuck into learning the ins and outs. I tend to be super perfectionist and pretty strict about what is and isn't on my system so Arch is right up my alley. It's been a pretty steep learning curve but I appreciate overcoming challenges and the sense of accomplishment that it brings.

Happy New Years and here's to new beginnings! smile

Hello everybody!
My name is Simon and i really love linux. I installed Arch Linux on my little netbook, years ago, and then i abbandoned it for a couple of months.
I didn't want to do that but my free time wasn't much. Now I can play around with arch a little bit and i want to learn a lot about it.
I saw that the majority of you suggest to watch the forum posts to increase the knowledge about Arch but i have a question:

I tried to read a lot of the forum's posts but I am not able to help people yet. How can I do something useful for the community? how can I became more aware about the system to start solving user's problems, here, on the forum?

I really want to know if there are some "Must things to do" to start to be useful to the forum and to start to increase my knowledge.
That being said, i really wish you Happy New Year!

This is not a "Must do" list, just a few pointers that may help.

How to Ask Questions the Smart Way

Focus on subjects you are interested in or have experience with.

Follow links other people post.

You'll see many posts where people ask OP for specific logs or the output of specfic commands.
Look up those logs / commands and try to understand what info they hold and why they ask for that specific info.

example :

in threads about usb problems you'll often see : post lsusb AND lsusb -t .
Figure out what the difference is between the outputs and why having both of them helps.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

archpen,  Welcome to Arch Linux.  You English is better than some that I have seen smile   A couple hints...   In English, punctuation is placed directly at the end of a word (touching it)  followed by a single space before the next word.  Also, the word "I" should always be capitalized.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hey everyone, long time lurker here. I've been a Linux user for 10 years, but recently moved everything non-server to Arch as I just fell in love with it.

I'm a sysadmin by day, and an amatuer programmer by night. I'm looking to get more involved with the community and can't wait to dive in.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hey there. I've been using Arch Linux for 2/3 years I think, though not extensively.

I'm still a student, and I haven't been lurking here a lot... I think it is time to learn a little more about how the hell all this works.

I really love Arch Linux. This is so simple! And I re-installed it quite a few times following experiments that turned out badly.
I'm missing a lot of things to know, and I'm not sure if I can really help for now I think.

Anyway,  PPNX9c3.png

Hello, comrades.

I'm using Arch for less then a half of a year. Migrated there from another flavour of Linux.

I'm writing this to give my thanks to the Arch Linux community. You are great.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello boyz and girlz, I've been using Linux on and off for maybe a year or two now, but have never really passed the beginner stage. I installed Arch because I wanted to learn more about Linux and computers and just to have something to do. I migrated from Ubuntu, which is a nice distro in itself, but I'm more of a 'learn-by-doing-guy', so Arch is much better in that retrospect. Hopefully I can contribute a bit one day with a bit of something.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi folks!

I'm dual-booting Win7 and Arch (Antergos), Windows for gaming and linux for pretty much all else aside for some specific RAM intensive software.
I've installed Arch because I wanted to get away from Ubuntu; I've always enjoyed using Ubuntu, but I wanted to explore, so I went from that to all manner of other distros, usually going for the tiny ones (because I just like miniature things and it was in an attempt to strip my system from anything it didn't need to be doing while playing a game/other intensive things, tell me if that's a dumb thought)

I ended up settling on Manjaro for a long while in a search for systems not based on Ubuntu and I was thrilled with how responsive it was, but I wanted to get closer to Arch after understanding that there are in fact some differences. It's my understanding that Antergos is really just an installer wrapped around vanilla Arch, so I decided to go with that.

My personal end-goal is to not be dependant on large software corporations to be able to do the things I like to do, and since I don't even live in the states, I don't like the idea of my data just being sluiced through systems. It irks me when my HDD light flickers when my system is supposed to be idle. (stop preloading Win10! I don't need it!)

I'd love to learn how to fix problems myself, but I find myself lacking direction or sometimes quite simply not knowing how to phrase things so Google can spew out the right answer, or at least where I can find it, so I thought it be a good idea to join the forums instead of just aimlessly flailing about.

Aside from the issues I'm having, I'm really loving Arch and hopefully I'll be able to learn how to resolve such issues with your help! big_smile

Please remember that Antergos is not Arch Linux. You're welcome to ask questions here about Arch Linux or Linux in general (in the appropriate subforums), but questions regarding Antergos should go to the Antergos forums.

Oh neat! I might end up using that for a LAN fileserver I wanted to set up!

Might I ask what the differences are between Arch and Antergos? Or is it more of a 'this distribution isn't supported by this community specifically' kind of thing?

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Most of us don't know the differences and that is a problem if you want to provide accurate help, so the answer is pretty much both (note that this extends to all distributions that aren't Arch Linux, we don't specifically not support Antergos here).

This has nothing to do with hate/feeling of superiority or the like, but the simple fact that we know how Arch Linux works and don't want to deal with whatever changes distribution Y made that results in ever so slightly different behaviour

The forum etiquette is posted here. I'm afraid I don't know the difference between Arch Linux and Antergos, which I suppose is one of the reasons why it can't be supported here. smile

Anything which configures and sets up your system for you is not supported here. This includes third party install scripts, derivative distros, and even friends who installed Arch for you. The way to install Arch Linux is to follow either the community maintained beginners' guide or the official (and terse) installation guide.

As for Antergos, look in /etc/pacman.conf for an Antergos specific repository. There may be other differences I am not aware of. The fact is, we don't know what all the differences are and they are free to make as many as they like. That makes it difficult to impossible for us to support Antergos.

The real problem is that we don't know,  Antergos is not maintained by us.  Our goal is for these forums to be the canonical reference for Arch Linux.  Other distributions try to "simplify" the installation by removing the essence of Arch Linux, guiding the owner of the system through the installation decisions so they know what is installed, why, and how it is configured.   Nothing is as frustrating as asking someone who is floundering why they installed <somePackage> and how they configured it, to have the answer come back, "I dunno, the installer must have done that."   That is a bad place from which to start with regards to support.

I'm curious, is the perception out there that Arch is that hard to install?  I may have done it a few times, but I can get a working, booting Arch Linux system in about 15 minutes from scratch.  I have never come close to that with any other distribution.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

The primary reasons have been well elaborated above.  But I'll add to this that these other communities will never grow if all their users just come here.  It is a bit of a catch 22 if one thinks "but my distro X community doesn't have much activity, so I came here instead" - those other communities don't have much activity because people try to come here instead.  If you run Antergos, try to contribute to the Antergos community, even if it is only by asking questions: questions inspire responses, responses are informative, and the question and response can then be a resource for others.

If you don't want to contribute to or be part of the Antergos community, then why use that distro?

Yes!
That is, I certainly got the impression, but I have a lot of trouble understanding guides I think. I mean, if there's one thing that doesn't go according to plan when following that guide, e.g. I get an error that wasn't accounted for in the guide, then that stalls the whole process -- I'd have to live-boot look up and remember or write down a possible answer, which usually doesn't fix things right away, so I'd have to reboot and repeat the process at tedious length.
I think that's what might happen to a lot of people, so it's perceived as difficult.

I feel unqualified speaking for the general populace though.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Yes but if you get stuck using the guide and post a post with the steps you took, we know from which base you come from and can retrace steps and help you figure out what went wrong (amending the guide if it turns out something was unclear). Using an installer makes all of this impossible. And if after the fact you come here with questions resulting from an automatically configured system we can't really help since we don't know what was configured, and worst of all you yourself will not have a clue either. Which again, makes it incredibly hard and tedious even if we are willing to provide help.
