I've recently been using cfdisk to create my partitions and set their types, and assign the boot, etc, etc. If I am using cfdisk do I still need to use mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda1, sda2, sda4 and also mkswap if I am setting the "TYPE" as linux for those partitions and setting the "TYPE" as swap for the swap partition in cfdisk?
I've been doing it anyways to be safe but have always wondered if it's something I still need to do.

Yes.
The partition type and the filesystem are two different things.
