ACTIVE = The high-level unit activation state, i.e. generalization of SUB.
SUB = The low-level unit activation state, values depend on unit type.

35 loaded units listed. Pass --all to see loaded but inactive units, too.
To show all installed unit files use 'systemctl list-unit-files'.

Internet connects fine and works great for a few minutes, then just stops working. Connection doesn't drop, the network just stops sending and receiving packets. My phone works fine so I don't think it's a distance-from-the-router thing. I've also turned off ipv6.

Any suggestions on troubleshooting?

Did you enable/start wpa_supplicant.service manually? I don't think you should be doing that if you are using NetworkManager.

Re: [SOLVED]Internet drops off (but remains connected) after a few minutes

Nope, I haven't touched it since I installed Arch. The status shows it as disabled though, even though it's loaded and running. Should I just disable it?

systemctl status wpa_supplicant.service

● wpa_supplicant.service - WPA supplicant
   Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/wpa_supplicant.service; disabled; vendor preset: disabled)
   Active: active (running) since Mon 2016-01-04 18:14:30 CET; 1h 13min ago
 Main PID: 579 (wpa_supplicant)
   CGroup: /system.slice/wpa_supplicant.service
           └─579 /usr/bin/wpa_supplicant -u

Warning: Journal has been rotated since unit was started. Log output is incomplete or unavailable.

Re: [SOLVED]Internet drops off (but remains connected) after a few minutes

You cannot disable it while it's already disabled tongue

Maybe you can try to stop wpa_supplicant.service and NetworkManager.service, and restart only NetworkManager.service to see how it goes.

Re: [SOLVED]Internet drops off (but remains connected) after a few minutes

wpa_supplicant.service just restarts automatically when I stop it,

Seems like it's linked to network.target

[Unit]
Description=WPA supplicant
Before=network.target
Wants=network.target

[Service]
Type=dbus
BusName=fi.epitest.hostap.WPASupplicant
ExecStart=/usr/bin/wpa_supplicant -u

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Alias=dbus-fi.epitest.hostap.WPASupplicant.service

This is just driving me batty...

Re: [SOLVED]Internet drops off (but remains connected) after a few minutes

You mean it restarts after you restart NetworkManager or it just restart anyway? Before=network.target and Wants=network.target doesn't mean anything unless wpa_supplicant.service is enabled/started.

Re: [SOLVED]Internet drops off (but remains connected) after a few minutes

It restarts anyway. NM also restarts but that's because it has a restart on failure option.

[Unit]
Description=Network Manager
Wants=network.target
Before=network.target

[Service]
Type=dbus
BusName=org.freedesktop.NetworkManager
ExecReload=/bin/kill -HUP $MAINPID
ExecStart=/usr/bin/NetworkManager --no-daemon
Restart=on-failure
# NM doesn't want systemd to kill its children for it
KillMode=process

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Alias=dbus-org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.service
Also=NetworkManager-dispatcher.service

wpa_supplicant doesn't have that, so it shouldn't restart on failure unless some other process is calling it.

It seems like someone else had the same problem a few months ago?

Re: [SOLVED]Internet drops off (but remains connected) after a few minutes

Restart=on-failure doesn't mean it would get autospawned again once you stop it...read `man 5 systemd.service`

I think NetworkManager.service could be autospawned by your DE through dbus though, not sure about what makes wpa_supplicant.service spawned again.

@tom.ty89 -- the wpa_supplicant.service is started by NetworkManager.service wink

Re: [SOLVED]Internet drops off (but remains connected) after a few minutes

Try disabling the power saving:

# iw dev wlp3s0 set power_save off

If this helps, make it permanent by reversing the boolean operator in the second udev rule in this section of the ArchWiki:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Po … interfaces

There are also some tricks you can try with the iwlwifi module:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wi … on#iwlwifi

Re: [SOLVED]Internet drops off (but remains connected) after a few minutes

Power settings turned power saving off when plugged in, I did try the iwlwifi tricks in the wiki though and it seems to have resolved it.

Thanks!
