Administration menu appearance

I've suddenly obtained an Administration menu in my gnome Desktop menu with one entry for the GDM Login Manager that doesn't work.

Any tips on why this has suddenly appeared? It's easily removed but I'm wondering where it came from.

Re: Administration menu appearance

I believe that there was a GDM update released today... did you pacman -Syu?

Re: Administration menu appearance

Just for more info, you can fix it by doing the following:
Add the gksu package.
modify the gdmsetup.desktop and modify the Exec line to:
Exec=gksu /opt/gnome/sbin/gdmsetup
You'll get prompted to enter your root password, and you can then modify the login screen.

gdmsetup doesn't want to run as normal user without gksu in the same manner as the other admin utilities like Time and Users (if you have the gnome-system-tools installed that is).

Re: Administration menu appearance

I edited the file, and now the administartor menu is gone? I also rebooted. But maybe after an X restart/reboot is supposed to be gone.

Re: Administration menu appearance

Did you modify according to my instructions above?
If you just changed that one line, it shouldn't disappear...

Re: Administration menu appearance

Yes I did. I also check with alacarte the menu editor. It's gone.

Re: Administration menu appearance

Alacarte might not show it (smeg doesnt show the admin menu either).
But recheck your gdmsetup.desktop changing that one line alone should not make it disappear.
Here's mine to compare:
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Login Window
GenericName=Login Window Preferences
Comment=Configure the login window (GNOME Display Manager)
TryExec=/opt/gnome/sbin/gdmsetup
Exec=gksu /opt/gnome/sbin/gdmsetup
Icon=gdm-setup
StartupNotify=true
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=GNOME;Application;System;Settings;
X-GNOME-Bugzilla-Bugzilla=GNOME
X-GNOME-Bugzilla-Product=gdm
X-GNOME-Bugzilla-Component=general

Re: Administration menu appearance

Sorry my fault, I made a mistake I also added gksu to TryExec. Now I can see "Login Window" in Alacarte, I turned it on, but I can't see it under Desktop, even after a (X)restart.

Edit:

I fixed it, a revert on the Aminstrator menu in Alacarte did it smile
thx for your help!

Re: Administration menu appearance

Im not sure what happened then, maybe try reinstall gdm and making that one change in the gdmsetup.desktop.
Mine is definately staying under admin.
