[Solved] Laptop --> HDMI --> cable --> DVI --> Monitor stopped working

For a few days now I'm unable to use my external monitor. Before it has been working fine for months. I assume the issue is related to some xorg/driver update, as the problem came up after a reboot. I read the wiki articles about xorg and Multihead setup, but was unable to find anything relevant. The laptop is a Dell Latitude E5540.
