Nvidia-304xx Legacy Drivers No Longer Load After Linux 4.3 Update

Last night I ran a system update that included a move from linux 4.2 to linux 4.3. It seems the nvidia 304 legacy drivers also require the new version, but I now get a fatal X11 error while trying to start up X. I can switch back to the Nouveau drivers and everything works fine again, so it definitely seems to be the legacy drivers that are suddenly causing a problem with the updates I did last night. In the log it tells me to check, it finds the X configurations files, but then fails and tells me it has failed to load the Nvidia Kernel Module.

I tried to downgrade, but since the legacy drivers now require 4.3, this wasn't possible.

Re: Nvidia-304xx Legacy Drivers No Longer Load After Linux 4.3 Update

Just as an FYI to those who might look here for a solution : dkms doesn't work either. Just go with lts for now and I am hoping that the bug will be fixed soon so we can go back to 4.3.3.

Update : Apparently my card (GT335m) has moved to 340 legacy. I could have sworn that it was on the 304 list (unless I wasn't paying attention) and now with 340-xx and 4.3.3 I have my bumblebee working just as always.

Thanks for this. I did not know about the 340 branch, I was able to upgrade my workstation from the 304xx series.  The box I use at home will have to stay on the terminator kernel...

Re: Nvidia-304xx Legacy Drivers No Longer Load After Linux 4.3 Update

I'm getting some kernel oops regarding drm and I'm using Intel on some machines.  Nvidia has quit on latest linux, so I've gone back to linux-lts to be able to use nvidia.

Switching to the lts kernel and the lts version of the nvidia-304 legacy drivers does seem to have worked. Although, my OpenSceneGraph application still seems to be running pretty poorly. I'm not sure if that is connected to the older kernel or not.

Its probably nothing to do with the kernel or the driver and could be just something else. Did you try running standard glxspheres and checking the framerate? Maybe a post in other related sections may be of more help.

Re: Nvidia-304xx Legacy Drivers No Longer Load After Linux 4.3 Update

Just noticed this same problem after I pacman -Syu yesterday and linux and nvidia-304xx were upgraded.  My wife tried to use the computer last night and X wouldn't start.  I quickly checked into it and got the nvidia symbol error and told her I'd check it in the morning.  I found the 47092 bug referenced by jasonwryan but that is for testing.  I don't use testing and this still happens with my x86_64 system with GeForce 6200 card which unfortunately still requires nvidia-304xx.  Either downgrading or using lts works but should this be a new bug report as 47092 is from Nov/15 and is for testing?

Re: Nvidia-304xx Legacy Drivers No Longer Load After Linux 4.3 Update

I also had the same problem after the kernel upgrade...I found a "work around" by doing the following

this will downgrade the kernel back to 4.2.5

edit /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

add this line before the 1st mirror

Server=http://archive.archlinux.org/repos/2015/12/29/$repo/os/$arch

save & close the file

edit /etc/pacman.conf

scroll down & uncomment the IgnorePkg =linux

save & close file

this will allow you to update/upgrade all pkgs EXCEPT the kernel and the associated pkgs

you will see a message stating the nividia 304xx can't be upgraded as it depends on 4.3.3

this worked for me...
