Unable to burn DVD

I'm trying to burn some PS2 games for my kid, but I'¿m unable to do so. First I tried Brasero, and it said it could not find the drive, then I tried Acetone, and got the same message, so I tried wodim, with same results, the error message now is "wodim: CD/DVD-Recorder not ready."

I checked with hwinfo, and I got this

20: SCSI 100.0: 10602 CD-ROM (DVD)
  [Created at block.249]

  Drive status: no medium
  Config Status: cfg=new, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown
  Attached to: #17 (IDE interface)

I got this when doing dmesg | grep CD:

[ 1.052927] scsi 1:0:0:0: CD-ROM HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T40L KC07 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5
[ 1.189895] cdrom: Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.20
[ 1.190433] sr 1:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0

I haven't used the drive for a long time (around may 2013), the drive makes noises, like it is trying to write or something like that, but I'm still getting the same error.
I placed an already burned DVD, and it does mount it and show the content, so I think is not a hardware issue.

There must be something I'm overlooking, but can really find out what

Thanks in advance

Marcelo

Re: Unable to burn DVD

Have you tried with different blank DVDs? Also, if even that doesn't make a difference, give cdrtools a try instead of cdrkit.

Re: Unable to burn DVD

I'm now getting the error message

Re: Unable to burn DVD

Sounds like a hardware fault to me through lack of use. Can you boot the system from a cd?

What command, exactly, are you using?

Re: Unable to burn DVD

Hi,

you did not try my stuff (libburn, cdrskin, xorriso) yet. smile

But if all the others refuse, there must be a reason.
What do you get from this shell command

cdrecord -vvv -VVV dev=/dev/sr0 -inq 2>&1 | tee -i /tmp/wodim_log

After the run, the content of file /tmp/wodim_log would be of interest.

Have a nice day smile

I didn't try to boot from a cd, but I did insert a DVD and it was able to read it

nstgc wrote:

This is the last command I tried

cdrecord -v -sao dev=/dev/sr0 S-m2.iso

And before I was using

wodim -v dev=/dev/sr0 --sao UltimateAlliance2.iso

Re: Unable to burn DVD

Hi,

> i didn't try libburn, cdrskin or xorriso, but I can sure try them.

Maybe i can find a good reason for you to do so.
(If you want to do multi-session on DVD or write fast to BD-RE,
perhaps ...)
But first the drive must be willing to work at all.

In the log we see the SCSI dialog between cdrecord and the drive
for the most simple drive inquiry.

Well, the drive is reachable and replies to inquiry commands.
So it is not a problem of permissions or dead cable.

The drive can tell its manufacturer, model name, and firmware revision.
The web says it is a slim laptop drive capable of burning all kinds
of DVD.

The only unusual incident is this reply on the command TEST UNIT READY

> Sense Key: 0x2 Not Ready, Segment 0
> Sense Code: 0x06 Qual 0x00 (no reference position found) Fru 0x0

An empty drive should Sense Code 0x04 (LOGICAL UNIT NOT READY)
or Sense Code 0x3a (MEDIUM NOT PRESENT). A drive with a DVD in it
should return Sense Code 0x04 (LOGICAL UNIT NOT READY) or indicate
that the drive is indeed ready for doing work.

Was a writable DVD inserted ?

If yes, what type ? (DVD-R, DVD+RW, ...)

Well, let's see what happens to a real burn attempt and what
replies from the drive makes it fail. So please try something like

cdrecord -vvv -VVV -sao dev=/dev/sr0 S-m2.iso 2>&1 | tee -i /tmp/cdrecord_burn_log

The message output might become very lengthy, especially in case
of burn success.
In worst case the file /tmp/cdrecord_burn_log might become 4 times
as large as the file S-m2.iso.
So it might pay off to use a very small ISO image

dd if=/dev/zero bs=1M count=1 of=my_dummy_file

mkisofs -R -o my_dummy.iso my_dummy_file

cdrecord -vvv -VVV -sao dev=/dev/sr0 my_dummy.iso 2>&1 | tee -i /tmp/cdrecord_burn_log

You may remove "my_dummy.iso" and "my_dummy_file" afterwards.

Depending on the size of /tmp/cdrecord_burn_log it might be
necessary to compress the file. If so, then send it directly to my
mail address scdbackup at gmx dot net. I will report here if i see
something noteworthy in it.

Have a nice day smile

Hi,

> libburn : SORRY : Asynchronous SCSI error on waiting after START UNIT (+ LOAD): [2 06 00] Drive not ready. No reference position found.

If there was a DVD in the drive then this means that the drive
cannot get an optical grip on it. Either the DVD is in very bad
shape or the drive is going blind.

Can it read written DVDs ?

$ dd if=/dev/sr0 bs=1M count=1 of=/dev/null

should report

1+0 records in
1+0 records out
1048576 bytes (1.0 MB) copied, 0.436538 s, 2.4 MB/s

xorriso's SCSI log is less verbous about transmitted payload data than
cdrecord's. So if you try with a realistically sized ISO image, better do

xorriso -as cdrecord -vvv -V -sao dev=/dev/sr0 S-m2.iso 2>&1 | tee -i /tmp/xorriso_burn_log

The log file will contain 72 bytes for each 32 KB of ISO data and
a few KB of messages about commands other than WRITE(10).

Re: Unable to burn DVD

Thanks again Thomas.

I tried

 $ dd if=/dev/sr0 bs=1M count=1 of=/dev/null

but the output was

0+0 records in
0+0 records out
0 bytes (0 B) copied, 0.000352005 s, 0.0 kB/s

So I guess my drive is going blind, and can just read but not write dvds.

Re: Unable to burn DVD

Hi,

It did not read anything. It should have copied a full megabyte
to the data sink.

So yes, blindness is a possible explanantion, but with both,
reading and writing.
Another possibility is that the medium is upside down.

Have a look into your system log file (or output of dmesg), whether
you find some error message text with a matching timestamp.
Or repeat the read attempt and look for fresh messages.

Look for stuff like

Jan 11 21:43:06 ... kernel: [...659.665871] sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0]
Jan 11 21:43:06 ... kernel: [...659.665873] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE
Jan 11 21:43:06 ... kernel: [...659.665874] sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0]
Jan 11 21:43:06 ... kernel: [...659.665875] Sense Key : Illegal Request [current]
Jan 11 21:43:06 ... kernel: [...659.665876] Info fld=0x22901, ILI
Jan 11 21:43:06 ... kernel: [...659.665877] sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0]
Jan 11 21:43:06 ... kernel: [...659.665879] Add. Sense: Illegal mode for this track
Jan 11 21:43:06 ... kernel: [...659.665880] sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] CDB:
Jan 11 21:43:06 ... kernel: [...659.665881] Read(10): 28 00 00 02 29 00 00 00 02 00

The keywords "sr", "Sense Key", "CDB" at the same time would tell
that it is about a drive or medium problem with optical media.
If you find such messages, post them.

(I think in this case, udev tried to let blkid read an audio CD.)

If you don't find anything in the logs, then do the burn run with
xorriso and option -V. Watching the dialog between program and drive
will reveil whether the medium type was recognized.
