New upgrade fails reboot (Solved with kernel upgrade)

Cannot reboot normally from arch latest upgrade.

I must use manual reset.

Arts audio no longer functions...no kde mixer.....no volume control  icon.....

Re: New upgrade fails reboot (Solved with kernel upgrade)

any error messages?

open the pacman log and tell us what you actually updated. maybe the kernel updated and you didnt run lilo? that'd explain the audio at least.

Re: New upgrade fails reboot (Solved with kernel upgrade)

This is pacman.log.........
==========================================================================

[04/24/06 20:22] synchronizing package lists
[04/24/06 20:22] starting full system upgrade
[04/24/06 20:32] removed ati-drivers (8.22.5-5)
[04/24/06 20:32] installed ati-fglrx-utils (8.24.8-1)
[04/24/06 20:32] upgraded alsa-lib (1.0.10-1 -> 1.0.11-1)
[04/24/06 20:32] upgraded foomatic-db-ppd (20060411-1 -> 20060411-2)
[04/24/06 20:32] upgraded k3b (0.12.14-2 -> 0.12.15-1)
[04/24/06 20:32] upgraded kernel26 (2.6.16.9-1 -> 2.6.16.11-1)
[04/24/06 20:33] upgraded libgphoto2 (2.1.99-2 -> 2.1.6-6)
[04/24/06 20:33] upgraded openldap (2.3.19-1 -> 2.3.21-1)
[04/24/06 20:33] upgraded syslog-ng (1.6.8-2 -> 1.6.10-1)
[04/24/06 20:33] upgraded udev (089-3 -> 090-2)

=======================================================================

Lilo ran OK.

System boots but with the failure to respond correctly to reboot as well as loss of arts and kde audio controls..mixer..volume.(arts related).

Probable that arts upgrade messed things up for audio in KDE but reboot is another matter.

Re: New upgrade fails reboot (Solved with kernel upgrade)

Re-installed kernel26.  No change in problems.  Still can't shutdown or reboot automatically.

Re: New upgrade fails reboot (Solved with kernel upgrade)

Hi!
there's a problem with latest alsa upgrade. Have a look here:

http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … light=alsa

do you use kdm? In my case without kdm I need to reset as well (I found out by accident, I always use kdm), no error messages, hard freeze - PC does not respond to anything. With kdm no problem or I can't see it. I know it is not the solution but give it a try at least you're not gonna damage the reset switch ;-)

I have a feeling this may be related to ACPI, as it's happened to me from time to time.  Does a reboot just hang at the "Shutting down" part?

Try booting with acpi=off and see if you can shutdown/reboot as normal.  If that is the case, you may either need a custom DSDT or just wait for the next kernel release (looks like kernel.org is pumping them out 2/day now....*sigh*)

Re: New upgrade fails reboot (Solved with kernel upgrade)

Gents;
I use kdm and haven't utilized alsa, only arts.

The computer freezes right after reboot or shutdown selection in kde window.  Must use reset to recover.

Will report on the acpi=off on next post.

Re: New upgrade fails reboot (Solved with kernel upgrade)

Acpi=off does not cure the reboot problem.

Will try running beyond....

Everything back to normal in beyond.

Will remove kernel26 from cache and re-download.

Re: New upgrade fails reboot (Solved with kernel upgrade)

No.  It means that the kernel26 in arch is probably the cause for the problem.  Beyond kernel was not affected by the upgrade which elimiinates all other packages downloaded at the same upgrade.
