Ugh, that's exactly what things looked like when I failed to get DRI working with ProSavage! Ugh, found the solution on dangray.org but that's defunct now, just a sec...

Ah, IIRC the solution to that lay in the IgnoreEDID option in the "Screen" section, "Display" subsection... Setting it to either true or false would rectify the situation, but leaving it unset would screw up the screen. Uh, maybe try something like this:

Section "Screen"
        [blah]
        SubSection "Display"
                [blah]
                Option "IgnoreEDID" "false"
                [blah]
        EndSubSection
EndSection

"Blah" being whatever else you happen to have in there. If that doesn't work, try setting it to true, and if that doesn't work... Well, I never said this would definitely work. :?

Great, it worked big_smile
Thank you very much

Doh. I should have waited some more, it works only when DRI is not enabled (but this doesn't make much sense). I'll look more about it soon :?

Did you try setting it to "true"?

Re: xgl - success stories?

Hi all,

I've got Xgl somewhat working. Few problems that I have are:
:!: video lags in mplayer
:!: I have to set keymap manually everytime I log on.

I installed Xgl from shadowhands repo and have it starting via /etc/inittab:

#id:3:initdefault:
id:5:initdefault:

#x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/xdm -nodaemon
x:5:once:/bin/su murkus -l -c "/bin/bash --login -c x >/dev/null 2>/dev/null"

Above the script named x has following in it:

#!/bin/bash

startxgl 0 gnome nvidia

Re: xgl - success stories?

It's really getting better smile

Kde apps now can be put in the notification area without any problem.
But still I can't use any openGL app in XGL, anyone knows how to do that?  fgl_glxgears and glxgears and xscreensaver only give black screens.
I'm using an ati 9600 using fglrx drivers.

Re: xgl - success stories?

finally got it working.  for those with older ATI cards, try xorg's radeon driver instead of the fglrx driver.  doing that fixed all my problems, and now i have a working xgl desktop (with a few minor artifacts).

Re: xgl - success stories?

I've 8756 driver of nvidia and installed XGL from the ShadowHand repo... Here are my impressions:

1) It opens and works great..!
2) F12 and F11 keys are not working so I can't see the windows line up so that I can select one to focus..
3) I can't logout GNOME, it freezes.. I have to CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE in order to quit GNOME... Is there a solution for that ?

XGL is really a great thing.. But I rather to use GNOME widgets like clearlooks etc...with of course XGL..!

I hope this future is near..

You could always try setting the gnome session to not prompt when exiting. That solved some similar problems a few months back.

Re: xgl - success stories?

I have it running in KDE perfectly.

Nforce2 w/mobile AthlonXP OCed to 2.17ghz
512mb of RAM
Geforce 6600GT

How i Did it....
According to the wiki, you first have to get the packages by enabling other repositories.  The first problem seems to be in getting the proper fixesproto module.
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … &start=100

pacman -S shadowhand/fixesproto

Was the only way to do it at this time.
***Read the whole thread above:  If you successfully install fixesproto, you'll then need to set it as an ignored packaged for pacman so you can do system upgrades without it complaining, and take note that in the future, the setting may need to be disabled.****
Then you can install according to the wiki, and it pulls in the remaining dependencies.
For setting up with KDE, you probably have to use kdm login manager.  I am using kdm as a daemon by entering it into the daemons line of /etc/rc.conf *switched to setting up /etc/inittab since the daemon method has a major drawback.

For setting up with KDE, visit the KDM section of the XGL howto in the Arch Linux wiki.   The next problem you may run into if you follow that howto (and the xgl howto hasn't been edited yet), verbatim, is in that it tells you to create contents of a file by the name of 'compizme', make it executable, but then tells you to run the command:

compizplease

Well, that's wrong, because that isn't the name of the file.  The name of the file you created, if you followed the guide, verbatim, is 'compizme'.  So the REAL command is:

compizme

In the spirit of total redundancy, if the filename containing the compiz script you had decided to name 'compizplease', then 'compizplease' would have worked for a command.  I think the point is it doesn't matter what you name it, as long as it isn't 'compiz'.   But what you name that file is going to be the command for starting compiz, and enabling defualt configuration and common plugins.

Part of the main purpose in XGL is to use compiz plugins, if I am correct (reasonable guess).  The wiki tells you the hotkeys to enabling certain effects provided by plugins.  So, I'd be surprised if this didn't work for anyone.  It worked for me, so anybody oughtta be able to do it.

Re: xgl - success stories?

I've got a Radeon 9800 SE (not softmodded to XT), and XGL runs almost flawlessly; the only problem is with window resizing, which stutters horrendously. All other effects are squeaky clean big_smile

If you use KDM, the easiest way to get it working is to edit /opt/kde/share/config/kdm/kdmrc to read 'GUIStyle = CDE', as suggested in the Gentoo wiki XGL installation guide.

Re: xgl - success stories?

I've got the same problem with window-resizing. I know that it worked with earlier versions of xgl from shadowhand's repo. BTW I have an ATi radeon mobility x700, and I'm not sure which version of xgl the problem came in as I haven't been using it very frequently.

xgl thread is now very long and mostly about making it work...

I am interested what configurations have people who were able to run it...

Can you write what is your video card, what kind of driver (anyone with DRI?), how much memory do you have, what kind of cpu and how fast everything works?

nVIDIA FX5100, 64MB VRAM. AMD K7 2400+ CPU and 1.5GB dual-channel DDR RAM. Xgl usually uses 100-200MB RAM.

It works faster than x compositing with RenderAccel, and much more reliable.

Re: xgl - success stories?

Ok, I'll give you my story wink But I installed it on Suse 10.1.
Setting up XGL is really piece of cake. The really big problem I've with ATI Radeon 9200Pro card. I was unable to run fglrx drivers work on Suse. I solved it after may hours spent with google - I installed the newest ATI drivers and than I put libGL.so from the old ATI drivers to /usr/lib overwriting existing one (I don't remember everything, but this is the point).
Now on Arch I don't want to run XGL, I've working on it for 2 months and I think it's not so great.

Athlon 64 3000+
512mb ram,
radeon 9200Pro
Suse 10.1 and, for 2 weeks now, Arch big_smile

I tried, I failed, no matter. Try again, fail again, fail better.

Re: xgl - success stories?

Hello,

My first post, and Id thought I should share my success story.

A'64 X2 3800+
1GB (2x512 dc) RAM
nVidia 7800GT
2.6.19-ARCH x86_64
Voodoo

Installed Xgl/Compiz x86_64, Voodoo 0.8. Used ABS to compile 64bit versions of all the packages, was a bit of effort but everything went fine. Really supposed in how easy things went. Huge fan of the whole abs thing, none of this ./configure make blah rubbish.
