For about two seconds after the AC adapter is plugged in, running
acpi -v says that the adapter is on-line. After that period, the same command reports that the adapter is off-line.
The laptop will not charge while acpi says that the adapter is off-line; however, if left powered off and plugged in, the laptop will charge to its usual capacity.
The laptop has been fully functional running Arch for a number of years. I have tried both downgrading the kernel and adding the parameter acpi_osi=Linux to no avail.

I hate to ask, but does this laptop still have the ability to run one of those "operating systems" from the US Pacific Northwest that came with your system?
Have you seen if it can play nicely with your charger?
What is the state of your battery? Is it getting old, or is it in pretty good shape?

No alternate operating systems.
I think that the battery is not super young (~4 yrs old), but it still holds about 80% charge.
