[SOLVED] Unable to play fullscreen videos

Weird problem I've yet to bump into -

When opening movie files through vlc or mplayer, they are shown in some low resolution, and if I try to play them fullscreen, it only shows the video center screen in the same low resolution while the rest of the screen turns blue.

Incidently, the only workaround I found was to open local videos through firefox which is able to go fullscreen.

I'm running i3 + Intel Graphics + Skylake i5 (Intel NUC) + Dell U2515H 25" + HDMI

Re: [SOLVED] Unable to play fullscreen videos

Do the various -vo options (xv, x11, gl, sdl) for mplayer make a difference?

Great things come in tar.xz packages.

Yes, -vo gl works on mplayer! Still would need a permanent fix for both mplayer and VLC (and other players possibly)

Re: [SOLVED] Unable to play fullscreen videos

Got it! After installing both VA-API and VDPAU packages it all works like a charm.
