Asus GL552V

So I got this new laptop, and so far it has more problems running Linux than anything I've ever seen.
It has an i7 6700HQ with a Nvidia 960M.
There's the experimental Intel support on 4.2, which I turned on, but its really really buggy.
From GDM, Gnome, XFCE and Plasma don't start on Xorg, Gnome on Wayland does but hangs when some things are done (I have no pattern yet but using the GPU or querying something from it seems a key).
Plasma from SDDM worked on one setup, but didn't on other (not sure why, just xorg & kdebase installed) the only difference I recall was whether bumblebee daemon was on or off.
Touchpad never works no matter the setup. It was already reported by someone on the Ubuntu bugtracker (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … ug/1520519)
Some media keys also have trouble such as brightness, turn off screen, change screen, touchpad switch.

I tried 4.3 from testing and 4.4rc6 from mainline, but neither boots. 4.3 just goes to a black screen and 4.4 freezes on 'Loading uevents' after loading the kernel into RAM.

Just got tired of trying arch and tested Ubuntu Xenial snapshot and Fedora Rawhide. Same result as Arch with the 4.3 (nouveau had modeset=0 just in case).
Mint so far works on 3.19, but not on 4.2, 4.3 nor 4.4rc

On plasma (Arch) I could adjust the screen brightness. but cant on Mint(3.19) so I guess that the driver was introduced later.
One thing I could experience in Arch sometimes that always experience in Mint is the fan speed going to the max upon login, and sticks that way forever.

Already tried asking for help on Arch, Mint, Ubuntu, Linux and Intel IRC channels and even on stack exchange. No one has an idea on why it behaves this strangely.
Even worse I fear that it'll become unusable once Arch (and the other distros) update to newer kernels (newer than 4.2).

Bumblebee works fine (fine = 2hours+ gaming without major problems, only one crash on save-game load, probably unrelated) on Mint, but as I said executing anything on the Integrated graphic card is like asking for a crash. Eg:

$steam

Worked only once, upon steam install, freze the computer other 6-7 times.

$primusrun steam

Always worked.
The same goes for running the games with no launch options instead  of "primusrun %command%".

This last issue was only tested on Mint, probably Arch will have similar results.
On the otherside inxi -Gx freezes Mint while on Arch returns:

I'll try to get an answer from the manufacturer (Asus) as well, yet I doubt that It will help anything.

Thanks.

Re: Asus GL552V

Its not only affecting this laptop:
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109081

For the ones who understand the kernel maintenance cycle, being this a bug and not a feature is is possible that the fix will be backported to all supported kernels once arrives or will I need to wait till ~March 2016 to have a kernel with the fix (assuming it is done in time for 4.6)?

Re: Asus GL552V

Out of curiosity, are you having issues with your CPU Fan running at full speed constantly? I have a GL752VW, obviously with all the issues you have stated above, just curious about your fan control.

Thanks

Re: Asus GL552V

I had with <4.3 kernels. With 4.4 the fanspeed works well. 4.3 doesn't boot for some reason.

The only problem remaining is: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/To … ursor_jump

Some function keys need kernel flags (in my comments at the bugzilla link)

Not sure if the Linux drivers have thermal throttling built in, but take care because under synthetic benchmarks (stress + furmark) the laptop can easy reach +95º (Celsius) with 10-12º room temperature. 752 should share this problem.

Re: Asus GL552V

Ah, I am running 4.4-3 with no luck in regards to fan speed. Sensors reports 25500RPM which seems a bit unrealistic to me. I do know my CPU fan is running at full from boot just from the noise level. No luck with PWMconfig, it seems to struggle with detecting my CPU fan PWM settings. Not sure if this laptop does use PWM I am assuming it does since the pwm related files exist under the various hwmon dirs. I manually wrote out my fanconfig, to no avail. The service starts but the fans do nothing.

Thanks for the added info in regards to thermal throttling.

4.5rc1 is out and has a lot of fixes and additional support. I'm running it right now with the linux-mainline package from the miffe repo.

I screwed up something in my install by attempting to do a PCIe passthrough, but am not 100% sure that it wasn't caused by the 4.5 upgrade, or something weird that went into the testing repo.
I removed the VFIO stuff and used the Arch Archive to freeze my computer to the 10th January, but there are bugs here and there hence I can't tell if 4.5 actually improved anything.

I'm using the 'asus-isa-0000' driver for fan speed control,

Here are my system modules, try to figure out if you're missing anything:
http://pastebin.com/UU3bUKV3

I think I recall having ridiculous fan speed readings while was on 4.2, 4.1lts and mint's 4.19, same as you.

If you're not willing up to risk your install but have any spare usb drive/hdd try this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … _a_USB_key and then make the system as bleeding edge as you can to see if it solves your problems.
In case it doesn't then your system isn't that similar to the LV552VW, but likely it is.

Re: Asus GL552V

I'm compiling mainline from AUR as I type this, going to see what kind of changes it brings, thanks for the tip on that. I'll report back if anything of note comes from it. I'm really hoping the fans will be under some control :-P. Also going to do a module comparison; the list you posted seems rather similar to mine but I'll have to check when my new kernel is up. In terms of my GUI, I have bumblebee and bbswitch installed/configured. I can get to the GDM but upon login, it's a hit or miss. Sometimes the system will freeze, other times I will get a functional desktop. Running optimus with glxgears shows that my NVIDIA GFX is being used for rendering (assuming since my fps is in the thousands) so stuff is functional graphics wise, just flaky. Not sure if you dealt with anything like this as well, just putting it out there.

Cheers!

Re: Asus GL552V

Writing this post on the GL752VW, running mainline 4.5rc1. Touchpad is fully working, WIFI works, Wired Works, FN control for Volume and Keyboard backlight work. My GUI now consistently comes up, running Gnome 3 for now. Optirun with GLXGEARS reports 160FPS with NVIDIA mainline. So far so good, no extra kernel params necessary to boot. Still have to work on the other FN keys, but my concern is still my Fans which continue to run at full constantly from boot. I'll be doing some more research on this Laptop to see if it does in fact have PWM fan controllers or not.  Some tips from anyone in regard to how to configure  fan control would be great. There is nothing in the Bios for temp/fan control, nor has googling around for a solid 2 weeks yielded anything that worked. Can't complain, at least I get use the machine for the most part. Can't wait until Arch is running 100% on it so I can remove the winblows 10 drive and drop in another SSD.

Thanks for the back and forth ClaudioP, I'll continue to post as I make progress with this system.

Cheers!

Re: Asus GL552V

Crafted a crude script to allow for controlling my back light by echoing values into /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness. Default value is 937, for now I'll use my script to change those values.

Re: Asus GL552V

Meanwhile on 4.5rc1 I have this problem: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/pm … om_suspend
Still I question if the kernel is to blame or if its somewhere else on some part of the system that I messed up with.

@SHARPY, What is the full output of the sensors command (lm_sensors package)? It has a driver on it?

Re: Asus GL552V

Also try to disable bumblebee, blacklist nvidia just in case, and boot again. Managed to trigger the issue you're having again.

My system once upon a time (first half of January) was rock solid, but after the PCIePassthrough experimentation got kind of problematic (as I said before).
By then I disabled bumblebee (for obvious reasons), but have been since then without it without noticing.
Now I attempted to play a game. Turned bumblebee on manually, and:

Jan 29 23:44:13  bumblebeed[9642]: [ 4724.247060] [INFO]/usr/bin/bumblebeed 3.2.1 started

[loop once per application launch]

Despiste those errors https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bu … ion_denied is applied.
The xorg-fonts-* packages are installed.

glxgears and gputest launch both fine with optirun, but launching a steam game will both crash and fill the logs with those sentences.
Also some "bumblebee ERROR: in getGLXDrawable" appeared somewhere, don't recall.

"What if It needs to be enabled on boot..." - systemctl enable bumblebeed - reboot

Fanspeed goes to the max upon reaching gdm, and the whole computer crashes upon login.
Switching to a TTY is no good since it simply renders the computer useless and spams artifacts all around the screen.

Maybe I did something I don't recall to fix the fan speed, maybe there was a regression...
I'll try to format this computer with the arch archive to the date of 10/Jan/2016, fortunately I have my pacman cache intact in case I need the unofficial kernels.
Wish me luck.

Re: Asus GL552V

Oh boy, this is becoming weirder and weirder.

I ALWAYS setup arch the same way, have done it dozens of tmes, so this setup shouldn't be far from what I've done a few weeks ago.
Started from scratch on an external HDD. Repos frozen to the 10th of Jan, Linux-mainline 4.4rc8
Very close if not the same I had when It all worked.

At the time I used "nvidia-mainline", now I used "nvidia-dkms" because the nvidia-mainline AUR package is already on a different version.
Bumblebee + bbswitch-dkms, I'm almost sure it is the same combo I had before.

Without bumblebee enabled on boot, it all works fine except for the Nvidia GPU.
When it is enabled gdm loads properly, the fan goes full throttle by then, logging in instantly crashes the computer, the exact same second the enter is pressed.

And then for some reason I decided to boot the repo kernel (4.3.3) knowing It would not work... but... it did!
4.3 never worked, that was my sole purpose of using the mainline kernel besides the touchpad driver.
I updated the BIOS, somewhere between the 9th and 10th,and wondered if that has anything to do with 4.3 working now, but judging by my bugzilla comment "Still doesn't work on 4.3, BUT it does on 4.4."  at 23:00 of 10 Jan, it probably isn't related, unless it was any change in the testing repo, which I had enabled at the time.

Basically these problems, bumblebee, fanspeed, crashes are all somehow related to the Nvidia card. Not sure if the blob is to blame, some random bumblebee config, the weather, but it is strange.
I got bored, and before giving up removed the dkms modules and installed the official nvidia and bbswitch packages. Booted up 4.3.3, and after disabling bumblebee (otherwise gdm would crash) I tried to start it manually after loading GNOME.
It managed to run everything I threw at it, fanspeed between 1500rpm and 3000.

How can I view an old dmesg l(ike from the previous boot, before crashing)? Journalctl logs don't have any relevant information. An internet lookup didn't helped.
I'd love to know why can't bumblebee get past gdm, but need logs to figure out.

Maybe later I'll unfreeze the repos from the 10th and let them upgrade freely, but I somehow doubt It'll improve much.

That regret that I scrapped a fully working configuration and now can't redo it. If I knew I would make Arch upgrade like Debian, like once every eclipse hmm

Re: Asus GL552V

Oh wow, some really strange things going on there. I'd have to agree with your theory that all of those issues are somehow related to the nvidia card. I recall 4.4 not having any issues with my fans until I configure the bumblebee stuff. Interestingly, I installed Asus-Fan-DKMS and NVIDIA showed up in sensors, with a fan speed but no temp. PWMConfig picked it up and wrote it to the fancontrol config. No luck controlling it though. I think at this point I am going to just keep it bleeding edge until kernel updates start to fix more things, 4.4 brought on a lot of fixes. I can at least use Arch on the laptop now. I'll post back if my tinkering yields any more results.

pacman -Q | grep bumblebee

pacman -Q | grep bb

If some specific configurations of mine can be of help to you, tell me which ones you want smile

I am very sure that my games are running on the Nvidia Card because the card is detect inside the game (also the graphics are way better and stable with the Nvidia chip).
If I run those games without "optirun" the games tell me they only detected the Intel chip.

The Nvidia GPU itself should not be the problem.

Re: Asus GL552V

Thanks kyoni. That extra information might be useful.
Maybe your GPU has a different wiring, its from a different batch, don't know. I still found nothing telling me that this is not on the Nvidia's driver, but a lot points to it.
Only if Nvidia supported optimums without hackish utilities such as bumblebee...

Meanwhile: https://github.com/Bumblebee-Project/Bu … issues/732
I think I filled two different bugs in there, but none of the respective threads solves anything and I have nothing else to reference. I'll edit the bug whenever I find more clues.

This seems to be a good part of the problem: https://github.com/Bumblebee-Project/Bu … issues/719

Re: Asus GL552V

Quick update. I am now running mainline 4.5rc2, so far my Fan problem has gone. The fans start off around 1900rpm and gradually increase and decrease as the temps fluctuate. I was able to run benchmarks via Unigine Heaven with very decent results (I don't recall but it was something around avg 32fps 1080P on medium settings) during this time my temps never rose abouve 77C. Working out some issues now with steam. Optirun is segfaulting with it, seems to be library issues. That's all for now. Thanks for all your help ClaudioP.

Re: Asus GL552V

I have yet to try the rc2, only played a bit with rc1.
I'm a bit more worried with exams right now than with the secondary GPU, but later I'll give it a shot. By then probably with rc4 or 5 tongue

Glad you managed to make it work smile

Re: Asus GL552V

How did you manage to install Archlinux on this laptop. I also have GL552V, but I can't boot the archlinux live cd(version 01-feb-2016)(on usb).

Did you use  any special parameters at boot? For me the screen simply goes dark and does nothing...

Finally had some time and managed to polish the install. So the instructions so far are:
- append "nouveau.modeset=0 intel_idle.max_cstate=7" to the live cd boot parameters.   (bug: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109081)
- do an arch install as you would do for any other computer. Leave nvidia and bumblebee apart, instal intel_ucode.
- I recommend using systemd-boot, its just simpler and works fine. In your boot entry do something like this:

title Arch Linux
linux /vmlinuz-linux
initrd /intel-ucode.img
initrd /initramfs-linux.img
options root=PARTUUID=insertPARTUUID rw intel_idle.max_cstate=7 nouveau.modeset=0 acpi_osi=! acpi_backlight=native

The "acpi_osi=! acpi_backlight=native" part is optional, but without it some of your media keys wont work (like screen brightness, display). No idea if the bug is reported, didn't bother to look up since had plenty of other things in my TODO.
- Boot, check if Xorg works. Double-check your dependencies, otherwise bumblebee will rekt the laptop and set your house on fire.
- Again, make sure that all of the mesa stuff you need is installed, lib32's included, and then proceed to pacman -S bumblebee nvidia nvidia-utils lib32-nvidia-utils primus lib32-primus.
- reboot, and 'systemctl start bumblebeed'. Test with glxgears/glxspheres.
- If it works then 'systemctl enable bumblebeed' and reboot, otherwise apply the "DRM 1.4 something" fix in the wiki (bumblebee page).

That's it, you got a fully functional system.
There are some issues with the touchpad jumping sometimes, but it is not specific to this laptop it seems. I don't use it and haven't bothered to find a fix for it.
You might want to try kernel 4.5 from the mainline repo, but so far I have the core 4.4 and so far its working, and since I'd love to avoid any more trouble with this laptop I'll leave it that way. tongue
BTW: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=208702

This was written from memory besides the boot entry, so it is likely there are typos.
Good luck with your setup

Re: Asus GL552V

Would you suggest this asus GL522VW laptop (the one I'm interested in is the GL752VW-T4157T version)?
From what I've read here it seems to work correctly except for the need of the nouveau.modeset=0 intel_idle.max_cstate=7 kernel options. Is it correct?

Well, given the fact that there aren't a lot of alternatives without optimus cards.
Personally my issues with this laptop so far are:
- The screen is kind of awful. It has the worst vertical vision angles in the world. Maybe I got used to the big colorful IPS screen thats on my desk, but I think that this laptop's screen is sort of bad,
- The touchpad sometimes jumps to the bottom left corner on double tap. According to the wiki it seems not to be specific to this laptop, but I'm not sure of what the cause is, nor if there is a fix incoming in the short term.
- There's the processor bug that was introduced in 4.3 with the cstates becoming problematic. That one seems Linux specific, I hope it to be fixed within the next months.
- Some FN keys don't work without the acpi fix. It should be fixed In a few kernel releases I hope.
- Optimus, avoid it, with fire! I know that if you want something with a good GPU you need to have an Optimus system, but if you don't then get something without Optimus. Its just plain bad. Installed a fresh system from scratch 3 days ago, slowly, step-by-step. It took me like 4 hours to do so on a install a piece-reboot-test basis. I managed to get bumblebee working all fine, and then.... nvidia breakage with glvnd. Downgraded the whole system a day back, bumblebee just stopped working, again, for the 10000th time.
I mean, bumblebee works is if start it manually after being logged on, and I can play games, but once I start it the fan speed reading just go nuts and report 250k rpm's, while the fan goes ~3krpm, if one logs out it freezes the system (hard freeze, not soft freeze), and the same goes to logging on with it enabled.

Seriously, take a look at the Lenovo Carbon or Dell Xps's if you don't need anything with a gorgeous GPU. That issue is not specific to this laptop, but dealing with Optimus its the biggest PITA I ever had with Linux.

Thank you for you suggestion.
I'm searching for a laptop with 17-6700hq and 16GB RAm expandable to at least 32GB and, at least here in Italy, I can't find any laptop with such hardware without optimus technology.
Can you confirm me that in case is it possible to not use the nvidia discrete card a t all and use only the integrated HD530?
In such a case I can buy it (using only intel vga if necessary) and then hope that the work in progress for vendor neutral OpenGL dispatch support can solve the optimus problem.

You can't disable it in the UEFI, but yes, you can simply blacklist the card.
Right now I'm running Intel only(and it works like wonders) until I'm sure that the current issue with the Nvidia glvnd stuff is fixed and have the time to test.
I still have to test running on Nvidia Primus instead of Bumblebee, but I need the power management since the Nvidia card is a power hungry beast.

If you only want to judge by the specs, then this laptop is a beast for it price. You'll hardly find better performance specs.
Note that performance is not quality. I'd love to have a better screen, a palm rest that isn't sharp to the point of hurting my wrists(this is more of a personal issue), decent speakers (that's a general issue with laptops), an aluminum chassis, etc...
Guess I can't ask to have everything on a 1100-1200€ laptop. For some reason there are 3k€ laptops (other than the existence of retarded users who pay for a brand and leds).
