[Solved] Kernel 4.3.3-1 lets eat gnome-shell all cpu power

On my old Inspiron 6400 I can not use gnome-shell after kernel update today. Downgrading to kernel 4.2.5-1 helps.

Re: [Solved] Kernel 4.3.3-1 lets eat gnome-shell all cpu power

You haven't provided much info for anyone to help you help yourself (hint); your kernel package is out-dated (4.3.3-2 is in [core]).

Re: [Solved] Kernel 4.3.3-1 lets eat gnome-shell all cpu power

Ah, sorry, it was a typo. In fact it was kernel 4.3.3-2 that lets eat gnome-shell all cpu power.
Sorry.  Mea culpa!

I have the same problem on my old Asus. Anybody knows what can be the reason?

Re: [Solved] Kernel 4.3.3-1 lets eat gnome-shell all cpu power

Meanwhile I did dmesg on kernel 4.2.5-1 and 4.3.3-2.

grep drm of dmesg result from kernel 4.2.5-1 is only

[ 9.903901] [drm] Initialized drm 1.1.0 20060810
[ 10.181134] [drm] Memory usable by graphics device = 256M

[ 10.182503] [drm] Driver supports precise vblank timestamp query.

[ 10.979804] i915 0000:00:02.0: fb0: inteldrmfb frame buffer device

But from kernel 4.3.3-2 comes

Re: [Solved] Kernel 4.3.3-1 lets eat gnome-shell all cpu power

What does the Tainted message mean? I got it after installing acpi_call after a reboot.

Tainted: G O 4.3.3-2-ck #1

Edit: it means the kernel is tainted, I haven't found what the G and O refer too. Journalctl showed it had to do with acpi_call. A reboot cleared the Tainted message but showed error on acpi_call. I uninstalled acpi_call until I can learn more about it to see how it may be useful if I want to use it or not, it was an optional dependency for something else recently installed and looked useful but have a lot more to learn on what to do with it. Uninstalling acpi_call cleaned up the reboot, no kernel errors and no tainted messages for now.

Either use the LTS kernel or pin down the regression and fix it for everybody.

The update today with kernel 4.4.1-1 solves the problem for me.
