Re: unique x applications

What do you want these "strange applications" to do? What functionality should they have?

Re: unique x applications

You mean apps like Tempest for Eliza?

Tempest for Eliza is a Program that uses your computer monitor to send out AM radio signals. You can then hear computer generated music in your radio.

Re: unique x applications

OK, these are not strange, but they are old X apps that more or less predate KDE, GTK, etc. These are the ORIGINALS, and some of them still rock:

nedit - text editor
xv - graphics viewer, editor, file manager
xzgv - graphics viewer and thumbnailer
xnc - Norton Commander style file manager
xcdroast - CD/DVD burner
xpdf - PDF viewer

On top of being original, they are FAST, since they are not burdened down by today's GUI standards and packages. They may look a little unusual to today's homongenized eye, but they work like a charm.

How about more of these? Who has more original old X apps that still do useful work?

I used xpaint and the imagemagick "display" some before, but that's been a while since (last summer maybe)... "glxgears" works like a charm, I dunno how old it is though... I often play xevil, it's old with no special toolkits or the most fancy graphics - just plain X and C++ iirc. But it's still one of the best games around IMO.

This one is on my list of something to try when I get some spare time:

Viewglob

I intend to write a CLI implementation of this; it's awesome.

Appallingly unamusing naming for the components of xnee -_-  Poor show on the part of the devs.
