Current/Extra repo question

I have got a question about those repos (excuse my stupidity).
I always thought that current provides the stable stuff and extra is just additional, presumably newer. Now, there are two different mesa versions, the one in current being the newer one. Same holds true for xvidcore. Is there any way of telling what the difference is, except looking at the PKGBUILDs? What is the reason for them being there under the same name?

Re: Current/Extra repo question

actually, they should not be in both current and extra.  Something most have gone wrong when updating. You should file a bug (bugs.archlinux.org) about that.

About the repos, current is the core, whereas extra provides all the extras like gnome, kde , etc.

Re: Current/Extra repo question

That mesa package is really a bug, it was in extra before it was needed for xorg. When it moved to current, someone must have forgotten to remove it.

Re: Current/Extra repo question

Ok, some others are affected now, as well:

kernel26beyond (in testing & extra)
ntp (in testing & extra)

Bug already filed, but until now, nobody cared. Well, it is not a very bad thing, but...

Re: Current/Extra repo question

dont worry so much about things in testing and extra. as for kernel26beyond, I fixed that already, your mirror is out of date.

please use an up to date mirror if you're going to file these reports.

Re: Current/Extra repo question

Hey iphitus,
yeah, you are right, I shouldn't worry too much 'bout it.
As for the mirror:
testing and extra: ftp.archlinux.org

Shouldn't that be up-to-date?

And also, if I enter 'kernel26beyond' into the package search field at Arch's main page, it shows:

Extra kernels kernel26beyond 2.6.16.beyond3-1 The Linux Kernel and modules, with the Beyond patchset. 2006-04-29
Testing kernels kernel26beyond 2.6.16.beyond2-1 The Linux Kernel and modules, with the Beyond patchset. 2006-04-11

But as you said, not that much of a worry, just for consistency.

there's a secret mirror before that.
