LightDM fail after kernel upgrade

I searched for this topic and didn't find anyone having this issue, thought I would post to see if anyone else has and get some ideas on a solution. A couple of days ago I did a pacman -Syu and got both a kernel update and NVidia driver update. I updated everything and restarted the machine. LightDM did not come up and looking at the systemctl status messages for lightdm did not reveal anything. I initially thought the Nvidia driver update was beyond what my card (GTX560) would handle but when I restarted the machine in fallback mode, lightdm worked fine and the running NVidia driver and kernel version were what I updated to. I implemented the lightdm.conf entry that forces lightdm to wait until X loads just in case that was causing the issue. After restarting the machine (not in fallback mode), all was well.

This morning I got another update to the kernel and kernel headers, did the update and restarted. LightDm failed again so I just restarted normally and the system came up fine. Seems like after the initial restart after a kernel upgrade, lightdm is failing for some reason. If I restart twice, the system is fine. I don't know definitively if the kernel upgrade is associated but there has been two kernel upgrades in the past week and both times it failed. Could be a coincidence, who knows.

Thoughts or log files I should look at to further investigate?

Thanks in advance.

Paul

Re: LightDM fail after kernel upgrade

Just did another pacman -Syu and this was upgraded. Same behavior, lightdm failed until reboot. I did change the "logind-check-graphical=true" in lightdm - apparently it toggled after the last 2 lightdm upgrades.

Still stumped but I know the solution, bounce the box twice after an update. Will post back after (if) I figure this out.

Not a Sysadmin issue, moving to Apps and DEs...
