Arch Linux Anywhere

So this got me wondering:

Arch Linux Anywhere.

Does anyone or Arch itself as an entity have a trademark or similar on "Arch"?  Because looking at the SysLinux boot picture in that article I could see some potential for brand confusion.

Edit: Also, if you read the entire article - at the end your installed system is called "Arch."  Which of course it is not.

Re: Arch Linux Anywhere

In the GRUB screenshot, the bootable OS is called "Arch Linux" so would this apply:

While there may be exceptions, it is very unlikely that we will approve Trademark use in the following cases:

..

The calling of any software or product by the name Arch Linux (or another related Trademark), unless that software or product is a substantially unmodified Arch Linux product, or properly labelled as a "Remix" as described above.

..

Their installer might not be "substantially unmodified."  However, I am not an expert to judge.

Re: Arch Linux Anywhere

We don't support third party installers anyway. So, it's unlikely that this case can be an exception.

Re: Arch Linux Anywhere

Another crappy automated installer, but not in breach of the trademark, IMO.

I'm a bit confused by the double negative: do you mean that the exception applies and it is okay to label the bootable OS "Arch Linux," or do you mean the exception does not apply and they need to tweak that name?

Edit: and JWR replied as I was typing this.

I was replying with this in mind:

So basically I meant that this case (probably) cannot be exempted.

Re: Arch Linux Anywhere

Then the consequence would be that on the GRUB menu they cannot call their OS "Arch Linux."

Re: Arch Linux Anywhere

That's not the way I read the policy. Given it installs Arch (ie., packages from the repos), uses the standard tools etc, so is really a remix:

policy wrote:

We recognise and encourage the concept of a "remix." Remixes are derived versions of Arch Linux, and it is intended that any software and hardware certifications will apply to a Remix. Therefore the changes from official Arch Linux products must be minimal to be permitted to use the Trademarks. These changes can include configuration changes through the existing Arch Linux configuration management tools, changes to artwork and graphical themes and some variance in package selection. In general, a Remix can have applications from the Arch Linux archives added, or default applications removed, but removing or changing any infrastructure components (e.g., shared libraries or desktop components) will result in changes too large for the resulting product to be called by a Trademark.

Not true. Arch anywhere is a 100% base arch install. It installs nothing but base, or base devel, or gresec linux, or lts. Any additional software is optional and all from the official repos. Arch anywhere gives you arch when you want it how you want it with no additional software added unless you desire and only the software you desire.
