Can't boot without disabling KMS

Hello, thanks for reading this.

I got an old Sony Vaio Laptop with an NVIDIA NV31M [GeForce FX Go5600] adapter.

I wasn't able to boot even the installation cd without disabling KMS (by setting either 'nomodeset' or 'nouveau.modeset=0' as a kernel parameter).

Apparently, I can't manage to get the nouveau driver working with such a kernel parameter set.

Checking the Nvidia article on the wiki, I found that this VGA adapter fits under the Unsupported drivers which require an older version of Xorg, which is something that I 'd rather not try.

I am now considering my options, especially about any other kernel parameters that I might try in order to have the laptop boot up normally without disabling KMS.

Any suggestions are more than welcome.
